Abstract

This study adopted a design-based research method to determine the


development of digital video blog (vlogging) media to enhance students'
specing' skills in descriptive text. This study was aimed at 25 students at
eleventh grade in Islamic senior high school mambaul Hikam 01. The purpose
of this study was to determine the feasibility of Vlogging-based learning
media in enhancing students' specing skills in descriptive text. This study
used a design method based on the Reeves model. The results of this study
could be concluded that the development of learning media based on digital
vlog media on speaking at eleventh grade in senior high school was feasible
and could enhance students' speaking skills in descriptive text.

Chapter II

A. Background of the Research

The development of learning methods is very much needed as an effort to improve the quality
of education even better.

Teachers must develop these learning methods so that students can understand learning well
with creative methods. The English language is no exception. It is necessary to develop
learning methods that focus on 4 materials, namely speaking, reading, listening, and writing
(Hughes, 2003)

In its development, there have been various improvements in learning media on speaking skills
to make it easier for students to understand and enhance the material.

One of the developments of learning media to enhance students' speaking skills is by using
digital vlogs.

Digital vlog is a form of blogging activity using video as a medium over the use of text or
audio as a media source for devices such as cell phones with cameras, digital cameras that can
record video. (Arsyad, 2014)

This is based on the various kinds of students' problems in enhancing speaking skills that are
not increasing, one of which is in the descriptive text material. Students have difficulty in
applying descriptive text material with speaking because of the lack of development of learning
media as a support.

Therefore, digital video Blog (Vlogging) media is one of the best media in improving and
enhancing students' speaking skills in descriptive text.

B. Research Question

Based on the above background, the formulation of the problem in this study is:
1. How is the development of digital vlog media to enhance students' specaing skills?

2. What are the steps for developing digital vlog media to enhance students'
speaking skills?

C. Research Objective

The aim of this research is:

1. Knowing the development of digital media vlogs to enhance students' speaking skills

2. To explain the steps for developing digital vlog media to enhance students speaking skills

D. The importance of research and development

1. For researchers, able to add insight and increase knowledge

2. For teachers, it can be used as an innovation in the development of learning media based on
student specing skills.

3. For students, it is hoped that students will be able to understand the speaking learning
material correctly

E. Assumptions of research limitations


Limitations of this research and development has several limitations, including:
1. This media is designed for class X senior high school students who apply thematic
learning
2. This media serves as a learning medium for students in explaining learning materials
3. This media requires a tool in the form of a cellphone to be seen together during the
learning process
4. This media helps students in the creative and fun learning process
F. Definition of Terms
1. Development Research
Development research is research that is used to test the effectiveness of a learning design
2. Learning Media
Learning media are media that can convey and distribute messages so that they can help
the learning process

effectively and efficiently


3. Digital
Digital can be defined as a technology system that can generate, store, and process data
that is used for interactive technology that connects one person to another around the
world.
4. Video Blog (Vlogging)
Vlogging is a video content that explains something, one of which is a learning material
for others
5. Descriptive text
Descriptive text is text that describes something. Whether people, objects, events, or
places.
Chapter 2

A. Previous studies

1. Enhancing Students Speaking Skill and Motivation Through Instagram Vlog (Trisila
Devana, 2020). This study used a speaking test and a speaking motivation scale
questionnaire. The sample of this study were 36 students of the English language study
program, FKIP, Baturaja University. The results of this study indicated an increase in
both speaking skills and student motivation by conducting trials in the experimental
class and the control class.
The similarity between this research and the researcher's research lied in the
use of a questionnaire test in taking data samples
The significant difference in this study with the research of researchers was that this
research is quantitative, while the researcher uses Design Based Research (DBR) with
a focus on descriptive text variables as a form of novelty.

2. The effectiveness of video blog (Vlogging) in teaching speaking of explanation text


(Latifah Amir, 2018) This research used a quantitative approach and used an
experimental design. This research was conducted to students of class XI 3 MA
Assidiqiyah Karawang. The results of this study indicated that there was a significant
difference in students' speaking between students who were taught to use vlogs and
students who did not use vlogs. It can be concluded that vlog learning can be
implemented as one of the learning media.
The equation of this study with the research of researchers is to use the same media,
namely Video Blog (Vlogging) in improving students' speaking skills
The significant difference lies in the form of this research using quantitative research,
while the researcher uses the form of Design based Research (DBR) with a focus on
descriptive text variables as a form of Novelty.
3. Using Video Blogging (Vlogging) To Enhance Agus Qowiyudin's Speaking Skill
(2019). This classroom action research was conducted to improve students' speaking
skills. The stages in this research include planning, implementation, observation, and
reflection. The research finding was that from 20 successful students get a score >75%
with an average score of 85% which exceeds the minimum standard value
This research had similarities in the form of media development research in the form of
a Video Blog ( Vlogging)
The significant difference lied in the method with a focus on descriptive text variables
as a form of Novelty. This research uses Research Development, while the researcher
used Reeves' Design Based Research.

B. Theoretical Review

1. Media

1.1 Definition of media

Media was something that provides information between the source and recipient of
information. Robert Hanick, et al (2012) while Bovee in Sanay (2013) stated that the
media was a tool to convey messages. Based on this explanation, it can be concluded
that media was a tool to convey messages or information which can be in the form of
video, audio, and audio visual to the recipient of the message.

One of the benefits of this media was that it can increase students' motivation and
interest in learning. Students will more easily understand learning or material through
the media. Thus the media can help increase student interest and attention about the
material being taught.

1.2 Principles of media selection


1.2.1 The media must be directed and make it easier for students to learn and
understand the material being taught.
1.2.2 Learning media must be in accordance with learning objectives
1.2.3 Learning media must be in accordance with the interests, needs, and
conditions of students.
1.2.4 The media used must have effectiveness and efficiency values
1.2.5 The media used must be in accordance with the ability of the teacher
who operates it.
1.3 Learning Media
1.3.1. Definition of learning media

According to Munadi (2010), learning media are anything that can convey
messages from source to recipient in order to create a conducive learning
process and the recipient can understand the material. Meanwhile,
according to Arsyad (2014) stated that learning media was a tool for
delivering learning messages.

Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that learning media was a tool to
convey learning information which aimed to make it easier for the recipient to
understand learning.

1.3.2 Characteristics, functions, and uses of learning media

According to Sukiman (2012) there are 3 characteristics of learning media. These


characteristics are:

1.3.2.1 Fixiative property


This feature described the media's ability to record, store, and preserve an
event or object. In this case, the learning process itself.
1.3.2.2 Manipulative property
This feature referrred to a long-lasting learning process that can be
manipulated briefly.
1.3.2.3 Distributive property

This characteristic referred to the learning process in a class scheme with


students who are in it.

1.3.2. Learning media function


Sanjaya (2012) suggested five functions of learning media, namely as
follows:

1.3.2.1. Communicative function


This function was used to convey messages from the sender of the message to the
recipient.
1.3.2.2. Motivation function
This function aimed to motivate students to study better
Individuality function
1.3.2.3. This function referred to the different character of students which
allows suitable media for that character.

1.3.3. The purpose and benefits of learning media

Sanaky (2013) stated that the purpose of learning media was as a tool to
facilitate the learning process, learning efficiency, and maintaining the
relevance between learning materials and learning objectives.

While the benefits of learning media were general and specific, namely as a tool
for the learning process for teachers and learners.

1.3.4. Types of learning media

Broadly speaking, the types of learning media can be grouped into 4 groups, namely:

1.3.4.1 Audio media, namely media that only involved the sense of hearing such
as radio.
1.3.4.2 Visual media, namely media that involved the sense of sight such as
newspapers, magazines, etc
1.3.4.3 Audio-visual media, namely media that involved the senses of sight and
hearing, such as films and videos
1.3.4.4 Multimedia, namely media that involved various senses in the learning
process.

2. Digital
2.1. Definition of digital
In the KBBI dictionary (2001) digital was defined as everything related
to certain numbers or calculation systems. Meanwhile, according to Cambridge
dictionary digital was an electronic technology that produces, stores, and
processes data in two conditions, positive and negative. Milley and Marcolin
(2001) state that digital was the use of interactive technology that made a person
connect with other people
From this explanation, digital can be interpreted as a technological
system that can generate, store, and process data that was used for interactive
technology that connected one person to another around the world.
2.2. The history of the development of digital technology
The history of the development of digital technology can be described as
follows:
2.2.1. The finding of the computer in 1940
2.2.2. The finding of the internet or the World Wide Web (WWW) in 1989
2.2.3. The finding of social media networking sites in 2000 and until now
2.3. Digital benefits
This digital era or era was the era of globalization, which was a process of
international integration that connected people all over the world
Here are some of the benefits of using digital, namely:
2.3.1. Ease of communication
2.3.2. Easy and flexible where everything was easy to access
2.3.3. Internet usage was more dominant than pulse

3. Video Blog ( Vlogging)


3.1. Definition
of video Blog (vlogging)

According to Fariz (2013) Vlogging was a blog that was displayed in the form
of videos. The use of this Vlog can provide opinions and interacted with the
audience more interactively. The use of Vlogs can also communicate and
expressed ideas or truths about something.

3.2. Vlogging advantages and disadvantages

Vlogging was a video content that explained something, one of which was a
learning material for others. Kamaru (2014) stated that the advantages of video
vlogging include:

3.2.1. Vlogging was displayed attractively that contained images, audio, text
that are combined in a unified whole.

3.2.2. With video Vlogging can facilitate the learning process

3.2.3. Doing Vlogging activities was an easy thing that can be done on the
internet

The disadvantages of Vlogging include:

3.3.1. Most of the vlogging on YouTube was just for entertainment, while it's
not for learning
3.3.2. The limitations of supporting tools for making a good Vlog
3.3.3. Additional skills were needed to edit the vlog results
3.3.4. Must have a good internet connection when uploading it
3.3. Requirements for Vlogging
People who make vlogging were called Vloggers (Kamaru: 2014). As a vlogger,
you must have good skills and abilities in making them, including:
3.3.1. Have self confidence and good speaking skill
This was required in public speaking. To practice speaking skills, this
can be done by talking in front of a mirror or directly in front of the
camera.
3.3.2. Has the ability to be responsive in using the camera.
3.3.3. Have expertise and can use one of the video editing software.
3.4. How to pack a Vlog
A vlog was a collection of videos created by vloggers which are posted on the
website( Siegchrist) . Here's how to make a proper vlog.
3.4.1. Find the reason for the Vlog
3.4.2. Choose the right website to upload Video Vlogs. Usually Youtube
media was an interesting choice for Vloggers to choose.
3.4.3. Give an interesting name or title to the Vlog video
3.4.4. Prepare several vlog videos on the channel, not just one or two.
3.4.5. Edit videos as attractive as possible
3.4.6. Promote video vlogs that have been made. One way to promote it was
via email or channel links to other social media.

4. Speaking

1. Definition of specing

Speaking was one of the skills that must be mastered by learners in a practice with the
interlocutor (Astrawan, 2013). This was because the specing material was the most difficult
skill to practice because it covered several aspects of English such as pronunciation,
listening, grammar, and vocabulary (Yanto 2015). But actually all it took courage and
motivation to speak fluently

Thus, four aspects to support fluency in specing, namely listening, pronunciation,


vocabulary, and grammar, must be mastered by students when they want to master and
speak well.

The techniques used in testing students' speaking skills in English lessons. The testing
technique does not only have to be an oral test but also an appearance test (Hughes, 2003.
For this reason, it was necessary to have a technique that must be used by the teacher in
learning which can then be practiced by students.

There were several techniques that can test students' English speaking skills (JB Heaton,
1988), including:

4.1. Using a
reading aloud technique where students read the material aloud

4.2. Using a
conversational exchange technique where previously the teacher gave long
sentences as conversations

4.3. Using a
monologue technique where students are only asked to convey something
through speaking

4.4. Using
interview technique

4.5. Using free


conversation through media such as vlog, youtube, google, etc

5. Descriptive text

5.1. Definition of descriptive text

Descriptive text was text that described or described people, animals, or things.

5.2. Structure of descriptive text

5.2.1. Identification

Identification here contained an introduction and general explanation of the main


character

5.2.2. Description
This section described specifically about the characteristics, traits, habits, and
others

5.3. Characteristics of descriptive text


5.3.1. Using the simple present tense
5.3.2. Using many adjectives in the explanation
5.3.3. There was a relating verb, which is a verb that was used as a link to the
explanation of the noun that was the subject
5.3.4. It only had one focus, which was to explain one object

CHAPTER III

A. Research methods

This research method was a design based research on a digital video blog (Vlogging) for
learning descriptive text to enhance students' speaking skills. The research design used the
Reeves model research design. The steps for implementing the Reeves model design in this
research are problem identification, problem solution development, product testing, and
reflection. Participants who took part in this study were teachers and students of class XI
MA Mambaul Hikam 01 Lumajang.

B. Research instrument

This research instrument used observation sheets, interview guides, and speaking tests

C. Research procedure

The procedure of this research is as follows:


1. Identification and analysis of problems that occured in the field by conducting
interview sheets and interview guides at this stage the research was conducted on teachers
and students of class XI MA Mambaul Hikam 01 Lumajang
2. Develop solution products based on previous studies then developed products to
solve problems that occur
3. Product creation media planning

Product manufacturing planning at this stage includes:

1.1 Reviewing the material based on the basic competency standards


1.2 Reviewing material about digital video blog media
1.3 Connecting blog digital learning designs with descriptive text material
1.4 Reviewing material about digital video blog media
4. Implementation of learning design
At this stage the researcher implemented a digital video blog learning design in the
form of directing students to explain descriptive text material into a video
explanation in the form of a digital video blog using free applications such as
YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc.
D. Data source
Teachers and students were the source of research. In this study there are several research
subjects
1. Research subject
The subjects of this study were 11 th grade students of MA Mambaul Hikam 01
Lumajang in the form of lesson explanation materials through video-vlogs.
2. Research sites
The location of this research was at MA Mambaul Hikam 01 which was located on
Jalan Citandui No. 57, Suko Jogoyu and Lumajang. East Java.
3. Population and sample
The population of this research was the 11 th grade students of MTS Mambaul Hikam
01 Lumajang, totaling 24 students.
E. Method of collecting data
The development data collection method in this study refered to the Reeves model
which had the following details:
1. Identification and analysis of probem
2. Development of completion solutions and development of learning designs
3. Trial of learning design products
4. Buyer design reflection
