Weekly Feeding Program for Children

Project Title

RATIONALE

To resolve malnutrition in the barangay or even the community and help the youth
and children attain their efficient way of living, we must implement development
programs and enhancement activities. The most common problem in every community is
food, especially during times of disasters and calamities. Just like this Covid Pandemic
wherein prices of commodities like food are in a surge.

Filipinos are suffering from hunger and are on the verge of starvation. We can
implement a program that will benefit our community with the help of concerned
citizens, the authorities, organizations, and foundations. Supplemental feeding programs
are the most outreached solution one could offer in a community. It is the best
preparation for our fellow citizens to encourage healthy living through healthy eating.

OBJECTIVES

- To improve food security for poor households and communities

- To alleviate malnutrition and hunger within the community
- To provide food for children every week
- To improve the nutritional health of the children by providing a healthy diet plan
to maintain the health and fitness of the children in the community.
- To educate the children and improve knowledge about healthy diet and lifestyle
habits.

SCOPE

This program applies to all the children in the community by improving their
weights and getting physically and mentally healthy to maintain their bodies. This
feeding program reduces stunting and combats obesity, and improves the nutrition
situation in all the identified nutritionally depressed. Every budget invested in this
feeding program will help and prevent hunger within our youth and children in the
community.

TIME FRAME

This project will be implemented for a month, from November 2021 to December
2021. This time frame is for first evaluating the results within the community’s children.
If successful, the feeding program will be implemented in the long run.

Importance and Contents of the project

*It promotes higher school attendance and reduces the rate of dropouts
A large number of pupils in developing countries are unable to attend school
because they have no access to a meal or cannot get all the meals required in a day for
their healthy growth. Many of them are even forced to do odd jobs and work hard despite
their young age to earn just that one meal to keep them going. School feeding programs
attract more children to school as it assures them of a meal. It also keeps them in school,
thereby reducing their dropout rates.

*It promotes the health and development of children

Lack of food or an improper diet causes malnutrition among children. This, in turn,
stands in the way of proper development of the children and their activity. Feeding
programs provide a healthy diet, though simple, which facilitates their healthy growth
and development. It keeps the children away from nutritional diseases.

*It improves concentration and educational performance in school

Another benefit of feeding programs to the community is that the food provided
improves their energy levels. When these energy levels are improved, the children can
concentrate better in class, and as such, they can perform better in their classes.

*It provides support to the children’s parents and guardians

It is the responsibility of parents and/or guardians to provide food. However, due
to poverty levels, some are not able to do this regularly. However, they can benefit from
school feeding programs for their children as the programs take the burden of feeding
their children off their shoulders. They are able to focus on other tasks with the assurance
that their children will eat in school.

*It helps the community rise above poverty

As we have already mentioned, the programs help keep the children focused in
school, and as such, they are better placed to complete their education. With an increase
in the number of children completing school, the community will, in the long term,
experience an improvement in their economy, thus rise above poverty.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

1. The first step in any feeding program is to assess the neighborhood. Check to see if the
proposal is practical and sustainable. The community must see hunger as an issue and use
the feeding program to feed children. For one thing, it cannot be made on a proposal
basis.

2. Identify potential leaders and volunteers. It is critical to work with the current political
or organizational structure.

3. Determine which youngsters are in desperate need of help. To prevent prejudice,

identify malnourished children using the Department of Health approach. The nutrition
scholar in the barangay, a local government employee, is aware of this. Community
health workers are aware of this as well. In assessing malnutrition, Filipinos have a
standard for anthropometric measures based on weight and height. This will also serve as
the starting point for monthly monitoring of the youngsters. This is to determine whether
or not the program was effective.

4. Always include the community. Include the parents of the children in the meal
planning, marketing, cooking, monitoring, and assessment. Enlist with the help of moms
and even fathers to do these chores. So, they may eventually grasp the concept of the
program, and if they like it, they will be able to sustain it as we owe nothing to the
community but there to help or be an instrument. When workers believe it is time to go
and let them do their work, we will exit as soon while keeping a careful check on them.

5. Always remember to document, monitor, and evaluate. This is the foundation for the
program's success or failure. These will serve as tangible proof for funding agencies.
After six months, children can graduate from the program, indicating that their weight is
now on pace with their age group.
