I. Introduction
Hello learners! This Learning Activity Sheet is another tool to help
deepen your understanding and master the mathematical concepts
and principles in characterizing the roots of quadratic equation using
the discriminant. Enjoy while learning!
Before we proceed to our lesson, let us first identify the unfamiliar words
that we might encounter in this activity. Are you ready?
The roots of the quadratic equation 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 4 = 0 are real numbers and are equal.
To find 𝒙𝟏 : To find 𝒙𝟐 :
−7 + √9 −7 − √9
𝑥1 = 𝑥1 =
2 2
−7 − 3 −7 − 3
= =
2 2
−4 −10
= =
2 2
𝒙𝟏 = −𝟐 𝒙𝟐 = −𝟓
The roots of the quadratic equation 𝑥 2 − 7𝑥 + 10 = 0 are rational numbers but are not
equal.
2. Solutions are real, irrational and unequal (not perfect square)
Example: 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 3 = 0
Given: a=1, b=6 , c=3
Substitute: 𝑏2 − 4𝑎𝑐
Solve: 𝑏2 − 4𝑎𝑐 = (6)2 − 4(1)(3)
= 36 − 12
= 𝟐𝟒
Roots (𝒙𝟏 &𝒙𝟐):
To find 𝒙𝟏 : To find 𝒙𝟐 :
−6 + √24 −6 − √24
𝑥1 = 𝑥2 =
2 2
−6 + 2√6 −6 − 2√6
= =
2 2
𝒙𝟏 = −𝟑 + √𝟔 𝒙𝟐 = −𝟑 − √𝟔
The roots of the quadratic equation 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 3 = 0 are irrational numbers and are not
equal.
B. Practices Exercises
Activity 1. FILL THE BLANKS FOR ME! (5 pts.)
Match the following discriminant of quadratic equation to its correct
description.
Column A Column B
1. zero a. The roots are rational and not equal
2. positive perfect square b. The roots are irrational and not equal.
3. positive but not perfect square c. The solutions are real numbers and equal.
4. negative d. There are no real roots.
V. REFLECTION After being able to identify the concepts learned, it’s now
time to test whether you have acquired and learned the skills
in characterizing the roots of quadratic equation using the
discriminant. Get ready to write and respond to complete
your answer on the table below.
