continued in the present. Such negative action can be unlearned paving the way to
an effective one. Rewarding present effective behavior also helps in therapy.
Cognitive behavior therapy involves not only ineffective behavior but also
negative thought patters which produce distress or stress. By replacing negative
thought patterns the client may feel better and function more effectively.
In Humanistic therapy, the counselor helps the client to develop a realistic
view of one’s self and be able to be his or her true self. The assumption is the client
is the best person to understand himself or herself.
What are the differences in the needs of the individual, groups, organization
and communities?
The needs of the individual, groups or organization, and communities are
different from one another but the counseling goal is the same. That is to cope with
negative feelings or emotion and develop effective thoughts and behavior thereby
reduce stress and increase positive feelings. Usually, individuals have a need to
cope with real life issues such as anxiety, relationship issues and school
difficulties. They need the support of a counselor especially if the significant others
can no longer provide the needed support. Issues which directly affect the
individual may result in undue stress or distress.
Stress or issues brought about by conditions within the group or
organizations such as in the place of work, may negatively affect the members
causing distress. Poor performance and unhealthy relationships may arise,
affecting in return the ability of the group or organization to achieve its objectives.
If left unchecked, the group or organization may be dissolved of it can no longer
serve its purpose. Group counseling may help members of the group skills to
express thoughts and feelings and as well as develop appropriate social skills in
order to resolve issues within the group or organization. The counselor studies the
dynamics of the group through patterns of relationships, communication and
workflow.
Widespread poverty, drug addiction, violence and natural disasters affect
every member of a community. These factors have adverse effects especially to
children. For poverty, drug addiction and violence, communities need counseling
service specifically of a community counselor to help members realize the need to
end the prolonged disturbance of peace and order which may have caused fear,
anxiety and undue decrease in economic and educational opportunities.
Counselors also help in building resilience of community members who suffered
loss, whether of properties or loved ones, during natural disasters. With
counseling, members may be able to accept reality and focus on rebuilding their
lives.

I learned that…
Counseling is all about assisting and helping other people who
is having difficulties in solving their own problems. Counseling
is a collaborative process that involves the development of a
confidential professional relationship that focuses on the
personal problems of the client. Meanwhile, clientele are those
normal people that are not sick mentally and psychologically
but needs guidance at critical moments of their life.
I realized that…
Being a counselor is not easy, they have lots of responsibilities
and obligations, thy must act right and proper in front of
clients, and they have to be responsible for all times. But
despite of that, counseling makes you feel satisfied as you see
yourself helping those in need.
