Lab Activity 2
Observing Animal and Plant Tissues under
45 to 90 minutes
a Microscope

Let’s Review
A group of cells that perform the same function form tissues. Tissues in the body are
classified into groups. In animals, the groups of tissues are epithelial, connective, muscle,
and nervous tissues.
● Epithelial tissues function as protection or barrier. They can be found on the
surface of the body or on the outer part of the organs.
● Connective tissues are generally responsible for the transport of materials,
support, and movement of the body.
● Muscle tissues are responsible for the movement.
● Nervous tissues are responsible for the transport of impulses.

In plants, the two major types of tissues are permanent and meristematic tissues.
● Meristematic tissues are responsible for the growth of plants while permanent
tissues are generally responsible for the transport of materials, storage, and
protection.
● Permanent tissues in plants include epidermal, fundamental (parenchyma,
collenchyma, and sclerenchyma), and vascular tissues (xylem and phloem). These
tissues are found in different areas of the plant body.

In this activity, you are going to observe different types of tissues using a compound
microscope.

General Biology 1
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

Objectives
At the end of this laboratory activity, the students should be able to do the following:
● Illustrate different types of animal and plant tissues.
● Differentiate animal tissues from plant tissues.
● Determine the parts of animal and plant tissues.

Materials
● surgical gloves and mask
● 2 scalpels or razor blades
● 1 small piece of pig’s skin
● 20 microscope glass slides
● 10 mL methylene blue
● 5 droppers
● 20 coverslips
● tissue
● 10 mL of pig’s blood
● 1 small leaf of any kind
● 1 celery stalk
● 5 compound microscopes

Procedure
1. Do this activity in groups with at least 6 members each. This laboratory experiment
consists of observation of four tissues (pig’s skin, blood smear, leaf’s lower
epidermis, and celery stalk).
2. Follow the instructions in each section to prepare a slide for each specimen. Using a
compound microscope, observe all the specimens under low power and high power
objectives. Draw these in Table 2.1.
3. Take note of the structures found in each specimen and write them down in the
space provided in Table 2.2.
4. Answer the guide questions that follow.
