Conceptual Framework

This study is anchored on the study entitled “The Effects of Mental Health in

Students' Academic and Social Success" (Evans, 2021). The said study examines the

prevalence and contributing factors of mental health disorders in students and their

effects on their academic success. Thus, it has been found that the influence of

psychological factors is quite effective in the case of motivating students to study well.

The school environment has a significant role in students' motivations and learning

behaviors. Educators are responsible for understanding each individual and creating an

environment where each student can succeed. The current study will determine the role of

these psychological factors on the STEM students' academic motivation and behavior.

The illustration shows a schematic diagram of the study, consisting of the

dependent and independent variables. The first box presents the demographic profile of

the STEM students participants as to:

Sex. It refers to the biological distinctions between males and females, determined

by genitalia and chromosome composition assigned at birth (Newman, 2021).

Participants' sex may affect the possible result of each factor since each sex has varying

hormone levels based on their needs and may experience different problems (Balanced

Well-Being Healthcare, 2020).

Age. It refers to the actual amount of time a person has been alive (Basaraba,
MER
2020). Determining participants' age is essential because it is associated with the

emotional well-being that influences each factor (Shallcross et al., 2014).

Grade Level. It refers to the educational program level studied by a student

(Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, n.d.). Knowing the grade levels of

participants is important because it allows the researchers to see the status of difficulty

that they are experiencing in school, which affects the results of possible factors.

The second box in the figure shows the potential psychological factors

influencing the academic motivation and learning behavior of the participants:

Stress. It refers to something that everyone goes through in their lives. It is the

way the body and brain respond to any demand that it perceives as a struggle or a barrier.

Stress presents itself in various forms and causes distinct symptoms, depending on the

individual (The American Institute of Stress, 2021).

Anxiety. It refers to a physiologic response to danger that increases heart rate and

respiration while also pumping oxygenated blood as your body prepares to fight or run. A

healthy dose of anxiety can persuade you to be determined in every task (Coltrera, 2018).

Depression. It's also known as clinical depression or major depressive disorder,

and it's well-known for harming people. A lack of interest in previously loved activities

many emotional and physical concerns by limiting your ability to function and carry out

your daily duties. (Torres, 2020)

Loneliness. It is referred to as a state of being alone or feeling alone. It is a

negative feeling of being left out, disconnectedness, and isolation. It causes a human

being to feel neglected and unwanted. However, one can still feel loneliness despite the

number of people or friends surrounding them. (Tiwari, 2019)

Hypothesis
MER
At the 0.05 level of significance, it is hypothesized that there is no significant

difference between the psychological factors, academic motivation, and learning behavior

of STEM students when grouped according to their profile variables.

Participants
MER
The study's participants will be the STEM students of St. Paul University Surigao

of the Senior High School department, ranging from Grades 11 to 12, that will be

enrolled during the school year 2022-2023. Participants of this study will be selected in a

simple random sampling method, given that each section from different grade levels will

be the population from which the sample will be randomly selected.

Data Analysis

The following statistical tools will be utilized to analyze the data of the study:

Frequency Count and Percentage Distribution. These statistical tools will be used

to determine the participants' profiles.

Mean and Standard Deviation. These statistical tools will determine the potential

psychological factors influencing STEM students' academic motivation and learning

behavior at Saint Paul University Surigao.

Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). This statistical tool will determine the significant

difference between participants' academic motivation and learning behaviors when

grouped according to their profiles.
