Lab Activity 1

1. This person will not be allowed to enter the machine shop in UP and use the lathe. In order

to simply enter the machine shop, he should be wearing the proper clothing required.

Wearing a short-sleeved shirt is fine but he should be also wearing pants and all of his

accessories must be removed. Assuming that he did wear the proper clothing required to

enter, he will still not be allowed to use the lathe since it requires additional personal

protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses for eye protection.

2. There are at least four tool operations that Keith should use in order to create an arc reactor:

metal forming, milling, grinding, and drilling/boring.

Metal Forming: This is the first step that Keith should do because this will let him create

the frame of each of the components of the arc reactor. He will heat the steel in extreme

temperature and then form the steel to the necessary frames that he needs.

Milling: Once he had finished forming the frames, he needs to create the necessary shapes

and curves at the components. This can be done through milling, where in you bring the

workpiece in contact with a rotating cutting tool with multiple cutting edges.

Grinding: After forming the shapes and curves, he will then need to refine and finish the

surfaces of the components of the arc reactor. By grinding, he will bring the workpiece into

contact with a revolving abrasive wheel allowing him do necessary surface finishing.
Drilling/Boring: Once the components are all done, the last thing to do is attached the

components together to build the arc reactor. By drilling/boring, he will be able to create

holes to put screws on so that the components can be put together creating an arc reactor.

3. There are possible reasons why there are saw teeth stuck within the finished work piece:

Pitch too coarse: In order to fix this problem, use a finer pitch on thin work sections.

Work not tightly clamped or held: In order to fix this problem, you must reclamp or hold

more firmly to prevent vibration

Sawing dry: In order to fix this problem, use a coolant when possible.

Wrong blade selection: In order to fix this problem, determine the type of material to be

cut as well as its dimensions. The type of teeth and tooth sets varies with the material to be

cut.

Wrong cutting speed selection: In order to fix this problem, determine the type of material

to be cut as well as its dimensions. Slower speeds are required for thicker and stronger

materials to reduce the dulling of the blades.

4. Workholding devices have a huge importance in drilling. It can help you drill in straight

down line, especially for those who have shaky hands. It can help in stabilizing your

material to be cut so that it will not shake or wiggle when you are drilling it. Some work

holding devices also lets you have both of your hands to work because you will not have

to hold the material that you are drilling.

There are also possible risks when you are not using workholding devices. The material

that you are drilling might break because you cannot the contain the constant shake and

wobble of the drill. The hole that you are drilling might be enlarged because you cannot

control it. And at extreme cases it might cause you to lose a finger or even a hand, so

workholding devices are really necessary.
