Activity 1:
How globalized is your home?
Go to your room and as much as you can, do an inventory of everything you have in
your possession. You will find out that the most essential among the “things” in your room are
footwear, clothes, computers, (if any), cell phones, television (if possible), and maybe a radio. If
you are a student, you may also notice books, newspapers, news magazines, to mention school
supplies and equipment.
Organize your inventory into two types: first, “things” that are made in the Philippines
and second, those that are of foreign brands. List the countries of origin of your foreign brand
items.
Choose one of you classmates and compare your lists to determine which countries
make the most household and personal needs you and your families have. Make a similar list
for Philippine-made stuff. Follow the matrix below.

List of Stuff Philippine Brand Foreign Brand

To put it into perspective, the products made in our country are made by Filipinos
for Filipinos, and they are intended to match the wants and needs of our people while
also competing with other countries and exporting to neighboring countries. There are
many goods that Filipinos have made, and we do support our own products since they
are reasonably priced. Although buying a product made in another country becomes
more popular, we still buy a lot of things and goods from other countries since we value
products made in other countries. With it's high quality, we favor a product that is
manufactured worldwide.
It is popular in all countries for just not all products to be self-made. Since the
Philippines is an island country, it identifies a multitude of constraints when it comes to
producing goods. And if it is manufactured in the Philippines, the raw materials would
be imported. Every country really has a scheme in place that no services are accessible
to everyone. As just a rule, borrowing from others is common.

Activity 2:
Find, read and clip or screen shot an opinion-editorial (op-ed) article
discussing globalization. Extract the underlying concept of globalization explained in
the article.

GLOBALIZATION
(Author : Tomas Larsson 2001 )

Based on the article, discuss globalization (is globalization a process, a condition, or an ideology?). From
whose perspective is the definition of globalization anchored? Explain in your answer.

Globalization, according to the article, is a philosophy that consists of a set of concepts

and values that serve as the foundation for economic and political theory and policy. The
researchers or analysts in the essay simply state their own interpretation of how globalization
operates from their own point of view. Scholars agree with those who criticize unfair trade and
they see globalization in a much wider context, and they both see the phenomenon from diverse
filters that consider many theories and views, making it a philosophy because it is focused on
people's opinions.

Globalization is a process that has been increasing its effect for many years. According
to Swedish journalist Thomas Larsson, globalization “is the process of world shrinkage, of
distances getting shorter, things moving closer. It pertains to the increasing ease with which
somebody on one side of the world can interact, to mutual benefit, with somebody on the other

side of the world.” Some historians date the beginning of globalization to the earliest days of
recorded human history, when people began traveling by ships to regions distant from their
homes. Others place the date more recently in the 15th and 16th centuries with the discovery by
Columbus of the “New World” and the exploration of the Western hemisphere that followed.
However, what most scholars refer to when they speak of globalization is the trend towards
interconnectivity that has occurred more recently, beginning in the 1980s and gaining
momentum in the 1990s after the end of the Cold War. One of the most important aspects of
globalization involves changes to the world economy, with shifts in the balance of power and
greater increases in trade between nations and corresponding decreases in government
regulations. Especially notable has been the rise of the BRIC countries on the world stage.
“BRIC” is an acronym for the four nations that are currently leading economic growth among the
world’s developing economies: Brazil, Russia, India, and China.

According to Thomas Larsson (2001), is the new term for imperialism, which basically
means that they use globalization to favor other nations by buying goods from other countries
and selling them to their neighbors. Changes in the global economy, such as shifts in the
balance of influence and increased trade between countries, are one of the most critical facets
of globalization. By transferring goods to other nations, they will learn about the customs and
activities that are used in those countries. You are passing on new information to others, which
they can incorporate.

In my viewpoint, Tomas Larsson's article

demonstrates that some people fear globalization since
they believe it would cause them to lose their cultural
identities (he gives us the McDonalds example). Any
developing-country leaders say that isolation has its
benefits. He claims, however, that the vulnerable can
better support themselves if they have access to tools,
technology, and foreign economies as a result of
globalization. “Those who are not open to globalization are
the losers in today's world,” he claims. Globalization is
seen as a mechanism that will improve people's lives.
Tomas Larsson's book was first introduction to the
concept of globalization.

Activity 3:

Study the three types of globalization and in not less than 350 words, write a narrative
on its benefits. You may support your narrative by including newspaper clippings (local and
international).

The spread of thoughts, products, and services around the globe is known as
globalization. The concept is often used in industry to describe an open economy
characterized by free trade, free capital flow, and corporate use of international labor
markets to optimize returns and favor the common good.
Globalization is motivated by the convergence of political, cultural, and economic
structures, which foster — and sometimes need — increased interdependence,
unification, and dependency among nations. The world becomes more globalized as
diverse parts of the world are becoming more interconnected politically, culturally, and
economically. Globalization is commonly divided into three categories of academic
literature: Economic Globalization, Cultural Globalization, and Political Globalization.
Economic globalization is the process that refers to the convergence and
incorporation of international financial institutions, as well as multinational firms that
have a major impact on international economies. In Political Globalization category is
mostly concerned with initiatives aimed at facilitating international exchange and
commerce. It also covers the organizations that carry out these programs, such as
national governments and foreign organizations like the International Monetary Fund
and the World Trade Organization. This style of study focuses on the social forces that
allow societies to collide, such as technologically facilitated contact and transportation
called Cultural Globalization.
It's important to remember that each form has an impact on the others. For
illustration, certain free trade policies that come under the category of political
globalization allow economic globalization. Cultural globalization is influenced by
strategies enacted as part of political globalization, as well as economic globalization by
imports and trade exposure to other cultures. The advent of technology is the common
thread that runs across these three forms of globalization. As previously said,
technology aids in the speeding up of each form.
Globalization has a variety of benefits on
industries. Those who choose to expand
internationally, however, reap a range of rewards,
which include:

Access to New Cultures. Globalization has

made world culture, such as cuisine, film, music, and
literature, more accessible than ever before. Because
of this free flow of people, merchandise, media, and
knowledge, you can have Thai food delivered to your
apartment while listening to your favorite UK-based
artist or watching a Bollywood movie on Netflix.

The Spread of Technology and Innovation. Many
countries around the world remain constantly
connected, so knowledge and technological advances
travel quickly. Because knowledge also transfers so
fast, this means that scientific advances made in Asia
can be at work in the United States in a matter of days.
