Quarter 2/Week 7 /Day 1

What I Need to Know

TOPIC: Analyze the practical use of Social Sciences in addressing social

concerns and phenomenon

OBJECTIVE: Determine how Social Science can be used to address social

concerns

What’s New

Introduction

The social sciences, like the physical or biological sciences, are intellectual subjects,
directed primarily toward understanding, rather than action. It would of course be a
curious kind of “understanding” that had no implications for action, and this is perhaps
especially true for the social sciences. Nevertheless, there is a difference between
enlarging one’s understanding of human behavior and society on the one hand and
trying to solve a social problem on the other. The social sciences are distinct from social
problem solving, but each can contribute to the other. A renewed determination to
ameliorate certain long-standing, as well as recently developed, ills of the society has
arisen along with a sense of power and confidence in its ability to do so. In looking for
ways in which to implement this desire for self-control, for directed rather than
accidental improvement, a good many leaders of society have begun to turn,
increasingly expectant, to the social sciences. Some have asked what the social
sciences can contribute to the venture. Others have assumed that these sciences have
a great deal to contribute to a better society and that they need only to be force-fed (the
recommended diet varies from prescriber to prescriber) in order to grow faster and to
make their contribution larger.

our government should address and prioritize.

SOCIAL
PROBLEM

. .

What is It

Social science provides empirical data about what the problems are and
encourages people to propose possible solutions, and you try them, and some
of them work. The thinkers are not always right, but they come up with the
ideas.

Social problem is any condition or behavior that has negative consequences

for large numbers of people and that is generally recognized as a condition or
behavior that needs to be addressed.

HOW SOCIAL SCIENCE ADDRESS SOCIAL PROBLEMS / CONCERNS

SOCIAL PROBLEMS / CONCERNS SOCIAL SCIENCE SOLUTION

POVERTY Social sciences help ideally to understand the

causes of poverty. Sociology can help us in
analyzing the role of caste or gender norms.
Economics may talk about the role of assets
like land and education.

Social sciences can be used to assess

whether a particular policy or intervention is
helping to reduce the poverty.

EDUCATION Considering the different challenges currently

facing our education system like students
attitude and behaviors, bullying, no child left
behind, family factors, and many more, social
science can address these concerns thru
Psychology as one of its branches. It makes
use of studying both social behavior and
neurobiological processes. With such a broad
area of study – the human mind – you'll
specialize in particular areas, perhaps child
development, interpersonal relationships or
social psychology in order to educate the
children in school and be equipped in facing
the different problems in their education.

HEALTH AND WELL-BEING From sports sociologists to public health

experts, from those interpreting medical
statistics to those evaluating policies for our
care in old age, social scientists are working
hard to make sure that our health, leisure and
social care services work to best effect.

Social geographers at the University of

Sheffield, for example, have shown that those
of us who don’t follow eating advice are not
simply weak‐willed or ignorant. Our eating
habits are influenced by a whole range of
circumstances. Some apparently unhealthy
choices may seem rational: if the person doing
the shopping knows that others will simply not
eat the healthy option and it will just go to
waste, they may simply not buy it.

HUNGER Hunger is one of the results of poverty.

Although we can associate Sociology in
addressing the problems with hunger,
Economics is the most appropriate branches
of social science for this. Economics is
a social science concerned with the
production, distribution, and consumption of
goods and services. It studies how individuals,
businesses, governments, and nations make
choices about how to allocate resources.
Economics focuses on the actions of human
beings, based on assumptions that humans
act with rational behavior, seeking the most
optimal level of benefit or utility.

ECONOMIC GROWTH In addressing the problems with work and

economic growth, one of the branches of

social science that will be a key factor in
addressing this is Economics. It tells how
humans make decisions in the face of scarcity.
These can be individual decisions, family
decisions, business decisions or societal
decisions. If you look around carefully, you will
see that scarcity is a fact of
life. Scarcity means that human wants for
goods, services and resources exceed what is
available. Resources, such as labor, tools,
land, and raw materials are necessary to
produce the goods and services we want but
they exist in limited supply.

What I Need to Know

TOPIC: Analyze the practical use of Social Sciences in addressing social

concerns and phenomenon

OBJECTIVE: Recognize multi-disciplinarity as an approach to looking at society

What’s New

Introduction

Since the end of the last World War, social scientists, along with other scholars, moved towards
a better understanding of man and his increasingly complex society. One result of this effort has
been the development of the pre-war attempts at a multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary approach
in the study of human society and the formulation of possible solutions to social problems for
purposes of improving the social, economic, political, and cultural conditions under which men
live. Suggesting greater cooperation, coordination, if not integration, of the social sciences
disciplines; this "innovative approach" has been expected to correct what has been a widely
held view: that social have been narrowly provincial or parochial in terms of their respective
disciplines. Therefore, what has been produced by them has been a disjointed, often seemingly
inconsistent, understanding of the problems of man and his society.

If we view all organized knowledge and thought as divided into two large fields, one of them
would consist of the social sciences, the other, of the natural sciences. Conventionally classified
under the social sciences are such disciplines as Anthropology, Economics, History,
Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology, and other similar ones. Treating all the activities,
achievements and attainments of mankind, the social sciences are as extensive as the scope of
human interests and associations. More specifically, they are mainly concerned with, and
contribute their respective disciplines' insights on the relation of man to man, man to society,
and society to society.

POVERTY

. .

What is It

A multi-disciplinary approach involves drawing appropriately from multiple

disciplines to redefine problems outside of normal boundaries and reach
solutions based on a new understanding of complex situations.
Multidisciplinary working is often seen as revolutionary by skill-centered
specialist, but it is simply a fundamental expression of being guided by holism
rather than reductionism, as described by Jan Smuts in his 1926 book Holism
and Evolution. One of the major barriers to the multidisciplinary approach is
the long-established tradition of highly focused professional practitioners
cultivating a protective boundary around their area of expertise.

Multi-Disciplinarity as an Approach to looking at Society in terms of:

Education An approach to curriculum integration which focuses primarily on

the different disciplines and the diverse perspectives they bring to
illustrate a topic, theme or issue. A multidisciplinary curriculum is
one in which the same topic is studied from the viewpoint of more
than one discipline. Frequently multidisciplinary and cross-
disciplinary are used as synonyms describing the aim to cross
boundaries between disciplines.

Health Care Healthcare, by design, is a multidisciplinary profession in which

doctors, nurses, and health professionals from various specialties
must work together, communicate often, and share resources. A
successful multidisciplinary health team strives to make the most
comprehensive assessment of a patient’s situation and to follow
it up with a full-range plan of treatment. Teams may also work
together to create and promote health initiatives for diverse
communities and to provide education to instill disease-
prevention behaviors amongst patients.

Environmental Problems Multidisciplinary approaches are required to address the

complex environmental problems of our time. Solutions to climate
change problems are good examples of situations requiring
complex syntheses of ideas from a vast set of disciplines
including science, engineering, social science, and the
humanities.

Economics Multidisciplinary economics deliberately uses the insights and

approaches of other disciplines and examines what
consequences their contributions have for existing economic
methods, theories and solutions to economic problems.
Multidisciplinary economists should be at home in their own
discipline and meet the high international standards of economic
teaching and research that the discipline has developed. At the
same time they should be able to recognize the limits of
economics and be willing to open up new horizons by following
new, discipline-transcending paths on which new insights into the
analysis and solutions of economic problems can be found in
collaboration with representatives of other disciplines.

What I Need to Know

TOPIC: Analyze the practical use of Social Sciences in addressing social

concerns and phenomenon

OBJECTIVE: Recognize inter-disciplinarity as an approach to looking at society

What’s New

Introduction

No discipline is an island entire in itself. That is to say, disciplines are by no means discrete

entities--they necessarily overlap, borrow, and encroach upon one another. Within each

discipline are sub-disciplines that may behave with as great a sense of separation as exists

between separately defined disciplines. Further, as each discipline evolves, the very definition of

it may change. As these definitions change, a particular discipline may increasingly “bump up”

against other disciplines. While the above are accepted a priori for all disciplines to a greater or

lesser degree, some disciplines are well known for their particularly interdisciplinary or “bridging”

character. That is, they may within the one discipline cover physical and social sciences as well

as humanities as they focus on considering interrelations between realms of knowledge. What,

then, is the difference between multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary efforts compared to efforts

within a bridging discipline? Ancillary questions might be: what can interdisciplinary studies

learn from the bridging disciplines, and is training within a bridging discipline particularly suited

for direction of or participation in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research?

What is It

INTERDISCIPLINARITY
➢ An approach to curriculum integration that generates an understanding
of themes and ideas that cut across disciplines and of the connections
between different disciplines and their relationship to the real world. It
normally emphasizes process and meaning rather than product and
content by combining contents, theories, methodologies, and
perspectives from two or more disciplines.
➢ Interdisciplinary requires a strong foundation of multidisciplinary
endeavor. One must be well grounded in multiple disciplines yet, as
Repko (2005) points out, interdisciplinarity is more than transferring
multidisciplinary challenges from two or more persons into one. It is a
relatively new form of problem-oriented critical thinking focusing
on process rather than domain.

Interdisciplinarity as an Approach to looking at Society in terms of:

Education This type of study allows the student to learn by making connections
between ideas and concepts across different disciplinary boundaries.
Students learning in this way are able to apply the knowledge gained
in one discipline to another different discipline as a way to deepen the

Teacher: ___________________________________________________ Grade Level: _______________

learning experience. The most effective approach to interdisciplinary

study enables students to build their own interdisciplinary pathway by
choosing courses which make sense to them. For example, it is not
too difficult to find a theme which crosses over disciplinary boundaries
in literature, art and history or science and mathematics. Studying
topics thematically is one way to bring ideas together resulting in
more meaningful learning.

Health Care At their core, interdisciplinary care plans are detailed plans of care
created by representatives from several medical disciplines or
specialties, each focused on a specific patient’s condition, treatment
goals, and methods for improving outcomes. As part of the care
planning process, input from each provider must be taken into
consideration and weighed against the benefits and risks to the
patient.

In many healthcare facilities, interdisciplinary rounds are an essential

part of patient care planning. This highly structured, multidisciplinary
process occurs either at the patient bedside or in a location that can
accommodate representatives from the entire care team. This type of
care planning increases communication effectiveness among
healthcare staff, building a sense of collaboration and teamwork and
crystalizing the overall picture of care that each patient needs.

History In simple terms, interdisciplinarity can be defined as a collaboration of

two or more disciplines around a joint theme. Roland Barthes
maintained that ‘interdisciplinarity means the creation of a new object
of study that no existing discipline owns’. The interdisciplinary
approach in history refers to the use of methods and techniques of
two or more other disciplines in historical research. A historian’s
perspective is a very broad perspective. A historian cannot limit the
scope of history. This is a holistic approach and establishes the
relationship between history and other disciplines of social science
and it is also related to the natural sciences.

Political Science Political Science is interdisciplinary in that it draws from multiple

disciplines in order to study the thing (politics) that it is interested in.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, but political institutions (meaning the
structures, values, norms and whatnot) did not appear out of thin air.
They emerged out of an historical context, so political science needs
a firm understanding of history and historical research methods. Since
politics is also about the interactions of people, sociological,
psychological, anthropological and like fields also contribute their
approaches and methods. Since politics is as much about what
people think should be as it is about beliefs regarding what is, it draws
heavily on political philosophy in framing its theories. Since politics is
also about who gets what (or who should get what), economics is a
strong influence. And since the dominant methodological approach in
the field is positivist/empiricist, it draws heavily on statistics and
statistical methodologies.

What’s New

INTRODUCTION

If you think about all of the knowledge and experiences that we gain over the course of

our lives, the amount that helped shape our worldview are probably too numerous to

count. For example, when we are young, our parents' perspectives directly inform our

own opinions on things like politics or religion, while later experiences, like romantic

relationships, shape our perception of love and the levels of emotional risk that we find

acceptable.

In sociology, such knowledge and experiences are referred to as social phenomena,

which are the individual, external, social constructions that influence our lives and

development, and are constantly evolving as we age. If this definition sounds vague or

confusing, it's probably because the category of social phenomena is incredibly broad

and complicated, but the fundamental principle of social phenomena is that it is created

by society, as opposed to something that occurs naturally in the world, like earthquakes,

viruses, or acts of weather.

2 Social Phenomena That Make the Philippines the Country It Is Today

Filipino Positivity This is one of the social Filipino phenomena that we are
widely known for. When disaster strikes, the Filipinos do
not lose their cool. They keep their happy-go-lucky
attitudes. With typhoons and floods and other natural
disasters coming our way, the Filipino people just deal
with the troubles as they come.

This optimistic fatalism gives the Filipinos the resiliency

to survive. By keeping a positive attitude, they keep the
belief that their problems will eventually go away. This
belief has served the Filipinos well over the years.

Istambay There really is such a thing as the “istambay

phenomenon.” While most of the Filipino social
phenomena on this list can be observed in just about
anyone, the istambay phenomenon is more common in
the Filipino youth. They like to hang out with their friends
in a large group. There is a stereotype that these
istambays are the lazy people who don’t work or
