ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 3: THINK ME MORE! Date Answered: _____________
Lesson/ Topic: More Business Applications
Learning Target: solve problems involving fractions, decimals, and percent - ABM_BM11FO-Id-5

Let’s kick it off!

There are various applications of fractions in businesses. Examples are;

• Mixture related problems

• Investment related problems
• Measurement related problems
• Time related problems
There are still a lot of more, but the following examples below are ideas in practical uses
of fraction in business.

Are you taking it?

1 2 3 1
1. Lilia owns three parcels of land of 12 5, 8 3, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 15 4 hectares. If she sells a total of 18 2
hectares, how many hectares will be left?
1
2. A carpenter finish a stool in 1 4 hours. If he works 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, how
many stools can he finish in a week’s time?

Here’s how it is!

Example 1:
1 2 3
Lilia owns three parcels of land of 12 5, 8 3, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 15 4hectares. If she sells a total of
1
18 2 hectares, how many hectares will be left?

1 2 3 1
Solution: [12 5 + 8 3 + 15 4] − 18 2

1 2 3 1
= (12 + 8 + 15) + [5 + 3
+ 4] − 18 2

Page | 2
12 + 40 + 45 1
= 35 + [ ] − 18 2
60
97 1 37 1
= 35 + 60
− 18 2 = 35 + 1 60 = 18 2
37 1 37 30
= 36 + 60 − 18 2 = 36 + 1 60 = 18 60

37 30 7 𝟕
= 36 − 18) + 60
− 60
= 18 + 60
= 𝟏𝟖 𝟔𝟎
𝒉𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒔

Example 2:
1
A carpenter finish a stool in 1 4 hours. If he works 8 hours a day, 5 days a week,
how many stools can he finish in a week’s time?
8 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠 𝑎 𝑑𝑎𝑦 8 4 32
Solutions: 1 = 5 =8𝑥5 = 5
𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑜𝑙/𝑑𝑎𝑦
1 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠/𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑜𝑙
4 4

32 𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑜𝑙𝑠
= 𝑥 5𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑠/𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘
5 𝑑𝑎𝑦

= 32 stools/week
ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
Or 8 𝑥 5 𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑠/𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘 = 40ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠/𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘
𝑑𝑎𝑦

8 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠/𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘 40 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠/𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘
1 = 5
1 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠/𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑜𝑙 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠/𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑜𝑙
4 4

40 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
= 5 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠 𝑥 4 𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑜𝑙𝑠/𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘
160
= 𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑜𝑙𝑠/𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘
5

= 𝟑𝟐 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒐𝒍𝒔/𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒌
Another example:
The Profit of a milk tea business for one month is 45,000.00. It is shared between two
partners, Jaime and Ramon. If Jaime received 9/20 of the profit, how much money did
Ramon receive?
Solution: Share of Jaime + Share of Ramon = 1
Share of Ramon = 1 – Share of Jaime
9
= 1 − 20
20 9
= 20 − 20
11
=20 share of Ramon
11
Or 20 ∗ 45,000.00 = 24,750.00 share of Ramon

Mrs. Mercado gave a test in her Math class of 55 students. In one of the items, 12 students
got the correct answer. What part of the class failed to answer the said item correctly?
Solution : 55 students take the test
12 students got the correct answer
55 – 12 students = 43 got a failed answer
43
= 55 got a failed answer

A Sari-sari store ordered 4 trays of medium-sized eggs at a wholesale price of 125.00 per
tray. If each tray contains 2 ½ dozen eggs, how much is the cost of the each egg?
Solution:
1 dozen = 12 eggs
1 1
2 2 𝑑𝑜𝑧𝑒𝑛 = 2 2 𝑥 12 𝑒𝑔𝑔𝑠
5
= 2 𝑥 12 𝑒𝑔𝑔𝑠

= 30 eggs
Cost = Price per tray
No. of eggs per tray
125
= 30

= 4.17
Conclusion: Egg would cost around 42.17

Now do it !

ACTIVITY 1

1. Aaron, Bonzerr, and Christian want to form a business partnership. If they need a total
capital of ₱75,000, and agreed to contribute 1/ 5 (Aaron), 1/4 (Bonzerr), and 11/ 20
(Christian) of their capital, how much will each contribute?

Page | 4
a. Aaron = Php _________________
b. Bonzerr = Php _________________
c. Christian = Php_________________
ACTIVITY 2
1. The partnership of Nina, Sarah, and Tessa earned a net income of Php 30,000.00 if
they agreed to divide profits and losses: 1 /2 to Nina, 1 /3 to Sarah, and the rest to
Tessa,
a. What fractional part is Tessa’s share? ____________________
b. Compute the share of each in the net income.
b.1 Nina = Php _______________
b.2 Sarah = Php _______________
b.3 Tessa = Php _______________

Ace it !

Direction: Solve the following problems with complete solution.

A. You were given the following capital balances of the partners of the Pinnacle Trading:
Pablo Php 10,000.00
Norman Php 20,000.00
Christian Php 30,000.00
The partners agreed to divide profit or loss in the ratio of their capital balances.
If the partnership earned a profit of Php 30,000.00 for the year, compute the share of
Pablo, Norman, and Christian to the profit of the business.
a. Share of Profit for Pablo = Php _____________________
b. Share of Profit for Norman = Php ___________________
c. Share of Profit for Christian = Php __________________
