Modal Verbs: ‘can’ for ability or permission
You are already familiar with using ‘can’ as a modal verb to describe ability or to give

Other modals of advice: ‘should’ and ‘must’

Grammar: Modals of Advice
All these modals of advice have the same grammar structure.

The difference is the importance of the advice.

Practice:
Look at the examples below and use the proper modal to give the advice in the
brackets:

1.) Doctor, my son has an earache. (touch his ears/use a hot compress)
He shouldn’t touch his ears and he could use a hot compress.

2.) I hurt my wrist when I was playing tennis. (give it a rest/take a painkiller)

3.) I think you might have the flu. (go to work/drink a lot of water)

4.) My daughter has a rash. (use this cream/scratch it with her fingernails)

5.) Samantha has allergies. (take antihistamines/get a pet cat)

6.) I have diarrhea. (drink plenty of fluids/eat pizza and French fries)

(or a different one from your imagination!) and tell your partner about it. They will give
