Oral Presentation: Pros and Cons of an Issue

Description:

As part of your assessment in ENGL123, you are required to give a short presentation (5-7
minutes) on a subject of general interest, using limited notes and appropriate visuals and high-
intermediate presentation skills. (CILO 3). The presentation can be done INDIVIDUALLY, or in
PAIRS.

Instructions:

Step 1: You may choose ONE of the following topics:

1. Pursuing a humanitarian profession

2. Receiving an education online

3. Learning foreign languages online or in class

4. Social Media: Advantages and disadvantages of social media, online news etc.

5. E-books versus paper books

6. Living in the countryside or the city

7. Having a part-time job.

Step 2: Take p.29 as a sample to build your presentation and use the adjectives and expressions
from pp.26-27.

Step 3: Design a PowerPoint presentation of 5- 8 slides addressing the following. Practise your
presentation together and agree who will do what.

a. Introduce the presentation and give some information about your topic (Introduction)
b. State the pros (and support them); 3 pros
c. State the cons (and support them); 3 cons
d. Make a summary statement (conclusion)

Oral Presentation Rubrics
Each student (or a pair of students) is required to give a 5-7 minute presentation of
a topic of their own choice using more than one type of audio- visual aids.

confident (e.g. voice is not too fast, not too slow;
students are not reading from slides, etc.).

Visual aids  Use of more than one type of visual aids (e.g.
PowerPoint presentations, videos, etc.) to present the /1
content efficiently.
