Learning Objectives:

1. Define medical ethics


2. Explain ethical values. Explain the present day oath taken by all doctors in Malaysia as
recorded in the MMA ethics code..
3. Summarize the need for medical ethics in society.
4. Differentiate between values, ethics and morals.
5. Illustrate the clash between medical ethics and moral codes .

Seminar topics:

1. Define Medical Ethics. Explain what are values, ethics and morals. (1 speaker)
2. Medical Oath. MMA ethics code meaning of oath taking. (3 speakers)
3. How do individuals decide what is ethical? Non-rational and rational approaches to ethics
(2 speakers).
4. Physician values (compassion, competence and communication skills, and the role of
physician autonomy 2 speakers)
5. Role of the MMA and WMA (2)
6. What does a physician do when there is a clash between different values (the law, ethical
practice codes and personal values/morals)? (2)

Instructions to students:

Research your topic as much as possible. Ask you lecturer for research material if necessary.
Your presentation should have about 6 -10 slides. Time limit for each speaker is 4 minutes.
Make a Cover slide and give headings to transition slides. Your last slide should list the references.
