CLASSIFICATION
• Thermal Balance - refers to the rising
movement or the pattern of fire, the normal
behavior when the pattern is undisturbed.
• Thermal imbalance - is the abnormal
movement of fire due to the interference of
foreign matter. Thermal imbalance often
confuses the fire investigator in
determining the exact point where the fire
originated.

Classification of Fires
Based on Cause:
3. Intentional fire (Incendiary)
– If in the burned property, there are
preparations or traces of accelerant,
plants and trailers, then the cause of fire
is intentional.
• Accelerant – highly flammable chemicals
that are used to facilitate flame propagation.
• Plant – the preparation and or gathering of
combustible materials needed to start a fire.
• Trailer – the preparation of flammable
substances in order to spread the fire.

Classification of Fires
Based on Burning Fuel :
• Class A Fire – Ordinary fires; they are the
types of fire resulting from the burning
wood, paper, textiles, rubber and other
carbonaceous materials. In short, this is the
type of fire caused by ordinary combustible
materials.

Classification of Fires
Based on Burning Fuel :
• Class B Fire – Liquid fires; they are caused
by flammable and or combustible liquids
such as kerosene, gasoline, benzene, oil
products, alcohol and other hydrocarbon
deviations.

Classification of Fires
Based on Burning Fuel :
• Class C Fire – Electrical fires; they are fires
that starts in live electrical wires, equipment,
motors, electrical appliances and telephone
switchboards.

Classification of Fires
Based on Burning Fuel :
• Class D Fire – Metallic fires; fires that result
from the combustion of certain metals in finely
divided forms. These combustible metals
include magnesium, potassium, powdered
calcium, zinc, sodium, and titanium.

FIRE SUPPRESSION, CONTROL
AND EXTINGUISHMENT
• Fire suppression means slowing down
the rate of burning, whereas, Control
means keeping the fire from spreading or
holding the fire to one area.
Extinguishment, means putting the fire
completely out.

FIRE SUPPRESSION, CONTROL
AND EXTINGUISHMENT
Four Methods of Fire Extinguishment and
How it Works:
1. Cooling - Uses an extinguishing agent
whose primary characteristic is heat
absorption. Water is the best general
cooling agent for firefighting purposes.
Used on Class A fires, the water absorbs
the heat generated at the surface of the
burning material, thus reducing the
temperature of the material below its flash
point (Extinguishment by Temperature Reduction)

2. Smothering - This excludes the oxygen
from the fuel so that gases or vapors of the
fuel cannot ignite and continue the
combustion. CO2 foam (AFFF) are used for
this purpose. (Extinguishment by Oxygen Dilution)
3. Separation - The removal of the fuel, as in
the example of turning off a valve in a gas
line prevents the fuel and oxygen from
coming together. If fuel is not available,
then heat, regardless of the temperature,
cannot affect the fuel. (Extinguishment by Fuel
Removal)

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)
• Fire Protection is the descriptive term
referring to the various methods used by
the bureau to stop, extinguish and control
destructive fire for eventual prevention of
loss of life and property. It has the following
objectives: To prevent destructive fire from
starting, To extinguish (stop or put out) on
going destructive fire, To confine a
destructive fire at the place where it began,
To prevent loss of life and property when
fire starts

HOSE, TOOLS, STRUCTURAL
HANDTOOL, AND ROPE
• HOSE STRAP – a 36 inch length of cloth
strap with a handle on one end and a
hook on the other. It is used for moving
hose layouts, usually up ladders or
staircases.
• ROPE – (safety line) used for hoisting
tools for various floors of a structure and
for anchoring to stationary objects,
ladders, charged hose lines, and other
accessories.
