Michael proposed to Emily on

November 27, 2018, at the same
Italian restaurant where they had
their first date.

“We were just finishing desert

when I heard acoustic guitars
playing,” Emily said. “I turned
around and to my surprise saw
our friend Charlie and another
gentlemen dressed in suits and
hats playing behind me.
We watched as they played a
few songs and when I turned back
around Michael was on one knee.
I rested my forehead on his as he
told me how much he loved me.
He asked ‘Will you marry me?’
And unable to speak I shook my
head yes and gave him the biggest
hug as the entire restaurant
erupted in applause.”

Emily describes their
wedding as “Classic,
unique, and fun.”

“It was really important

to us to have a traditional
wedding that wasn’t
too structured and for
everyone to have fun,”
Emily said. “We kept
everything simple and
classic while having
traditional vows, first
dances, cake cutting,
etc. We wanted a laid-
back reception so for
dinner we served an all-
appetizer buffet filled with
Wisconsin-based foods.
We also had a popcorn
bar and a candy buffet per
Michael’s request.”

THEIR ADVICE TO
OTHER COUPLES:

“Stay on top of things,”

Emily said. “You really don’t
realize how much planning
goes into a wedding until
you’re, well, planning a
wedding. As simple and laid
back as we tried to make
our wedding, there were still
so many details that had to
be taken care of. If you don’t
stay ahead of them they can
pile up quickly!”

“We met how everyone meets

these days: online.” Eileen had just
moved to town and Abby offered
to be her friend. “Little did we
know, we would be more than
friends from that point on.”

Abby has been traveling to

Wisconsin one weekend a month
for school over the last few years.
Eileen would sometimes join Abby
on her weekends and always
found the best places while Abby
was in class. One of those places
was the River Walk in downtown
Milwaukee, where Abby decided to
pop the question.

Abby loved getting ready together. “It was so relaxing and exciting
to be with each other every second of the day.”

Eileen’s favorite moment was sitting outside with Abby just before they walked down
the aisle. “Those minutes of just being alone together made the day perfect.”

“It was an industrial-style venue. We chose not to have a bridal party,

keeping it simple and laid back.”

Keeping our wedding small was the best thing we could have done. It gave us time to
socialize with everyone that was important to us and still have time to ourselves.

Claire Cortez

PHOTOGRAPHY BY IVORY+BLISS

Claire and Cortez met in Iowa City

in 2015 when Claire was out
with friends at Summit, where
Cortez worked. “When I was
leaving he stopped me and said
he had seen me earlier and
didn’t want me to leave without
getting to talk to me!”

Cortez proposed at the 2019

Iowa State Fair while they were
working at Jalapeno Pete’s, which
is run by Claire’s family. He and
Claire’s mom arranged to have
a raffle for all of the employees.
When Claire’s name was drawn,
she was asked to close her eyes.
“When I opened them, Cortez
was on one knee! All our friends
and family were there.”

In honor of that magical moment,

their rehearsal dinner had an
Iowa State Fair theme.

Claire and Cortez’s wedding
colors were blushes,

Claire and Cortez loved

celebrating their love with
everyone they care about
most. “We postponed once,
which was a hard decision to
make, but it ended up being
so worth it when everyone
was able to be there!”

“We loved how many flowers

we had and how cozy
everything felt—it was a rainy
day, but I think everyone
forgot about the weather!”

36 IOWA WEDDING EXPERIENCE IOWAWEDDINGEXPERIENCE.COM 37

“Take time to just look around
and soak it all in. The day goes
so fast! Having a great team of
planners and vendors makes
the whole planning process
really easy and fun.”

Emily Murphy
09.04.2021
After about a year of dating, Emily
and Murphy were so in love that they
knew engagement was a question of
when, not if. On a trip to Lake Tahoe,
PHOTOGRAPHY BY IVORY+BLISS Murphy planned on proposing after
they had hiked to the top of Mt. Tallac.
“About halfway up, I couldn’t wait any
longer!” Murphy said. He asked her to
stop, dug the ring out of his backpack
and proposed right then and there.
“I popped the question, she said yes,
and we sat on the edge of a rock at
(halfway to) the top of Mt. Tallac.”

THEIR ADVICE TO OTHER COUPLES:

Tastings are fun! Do a couple of them, eat all the food, take separate
notes, then grab a drink and compare your notes. And really taste and
enjoy them then, because at the wedding, you won’t be!

Between postponing a full year due to COVID and waiting to find the
perfect life partner, we had waited for this day in so many ways and wanted
to come up with a simple saying that really captured that.

42 IOWA WEDDING EXPERIENCE IOWAWEDDINGEXPERIENCE.COM 43

Emily described their
wedding style as classic
modern. “I wanted it to
be timeless and unique,
with a little edge.”

Emily’s dad “knocked it out of the

park” with his speech. He touched
on their close relationship and
honored their Czech heritage with
a toast in perfect Czech that was
prepared by his relative in the Old
Country. Tears were required.

Danielle and Tanner met at the beginning of the pandemic. “I was a nanny
at the time and had somehow become the go-to for unprofessional
haircuts from a few people,” Danielle said. Tanner needed one and a
mutual friend brought Danielle over to do just that. “We went on our first
date about a month later and from then on we were inseparable!”

The most special moment for
me was at the end of the night,
the DJ played Adele’s “Make
You Feel My Love,” which was
what I walked down the aisle
to. We just danced in the
middle while those who were
still there circled around us. It
wasn’t planned but it couldn’t
have been more perfect.

THEIR WEDDING STYLE:

“Boho-rustic. I loved the

combination of natural,
muted tones paired with
some more moody colors,
especially in the fall. Tanner
knew he wanted a velvet
suit for the big day, so we
found a color that worked
with our day.”

There’s always “more” that can be done when it comes to wedding
planning. Take things one step at a time and make sure that your
day is how you want it to be, not how you’re told it should be.

FLORIST TIFFANY LANDUYT

When it comes to wedding flowers, there’s a lot to consider: what’s in
season? What will compliment your wedding colors? Do you (or any
of your guests) have pollen allergies? Don’t worry, though—an expert
florist can help with all of that. Tiffany Landuyt, owner of Studio
Bloom Iowa, offers her advice on how to pick your perfect floral.

Abbey Evan 09.25.2021
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ZOEY MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

Evan and Abbey are both

civil engineers and met while
interning at Linn County
Secondary Roads in the
summer of 2017. “Evan went
to Iowa State and I went to
Iowa, but we looked past that
fact when we saw how well we
clicked,” Abbey said.

After a summer of staking

roadways, Evan invited Abbey
to a demolition derby. “After
the races we went a bar, and
Evan did not talk to me the
rest of the night,” Abbey said.
“The night ended with me
telling Evan I was leaving
because he hadn’t kissed me
yet.” Almost immediately, Evan
sent her a text asking her to
dinner the following night.
“And the rest is history!”

Evan proposed to Abbey at
Palisades Kepler Park in Mount
Vernon. “I knew Evan was
going to propose because
he told me we were getting
family pictures taken, which
we had never done. It was a
beautiful afternoon sunset full
of ‘surprises’ and laughter!”
Evans favorite part of the
wedding was sneaking
away for sunset photos.
That time away from the
commotion and just being
silly with each other and
our amazing photographer,
Zoey, was something they
will never forget. Abbey’s
favorite part was very
amateurly dancing to their
first dance song,
“You Make My Dreams” by
Hall & Oates.

Plan your wedding for you and
your partner. Do not let the noise
of others sway your decisions.
Ask for advice and opinions, but
at the end of the day do what
makes you the most happy. Your
wedding is a celebration of you
and your partner’s love, and
nothing else!

During one of their dates, Evan handed Abbey a dollar bill and bet her that she
wouldn’t tear it in half—which of course she did. Since their relationship was long
distance at the time, they decided to each keep half of the bill as a memento. Four
years later, the reunited halves are framed and hanging on their wall.

“Most would describe our
wedding as ‘boho,’ but I really just
put together all of my favorite
colors, and with the help of my
mom and Spencer’s mom we were
able to put together this beautiful
day,” Kaley said. “It wouldn’t have
been possible without the help of
Spencer’s mom letting us use her
beautiful property in Ankeny.”
To achieve their wedding look,
Kaley, Spencer, and their families
made many of the decorations
themselves. They built benches
in front of a large oak tree on
the property for the ceremony
and decorated the shop for their
reception. Many of the decorations
and other special elements were
handmade, including hand-dyed
tablecloths and a 15-foot teepee!

“It was so fun getting together

and doing all of the projects. It
made the day a lot more special
knowing all of the hard work that
was involved,” Kaley said.

Whitney and Anthony were
introduced by their sisters, who
were close friends. They began their
relationship through text messages
and Snapchat. “Once we met in
person, we both knew there was a
special spark,” Whitney said.
After exactly two years together,
one of Whitney’s friends, who is a
photographer, invited them to a photo
shoot at a local state park. “I was all for
it, but I had to convince Anthony, who
seemed unenthusiastic about being
dragged to an outdoor photoshoot
at the end of November,” Whitney
said, “Little did I know Anthony set
the whole thing up and popped the
question right at the beginning of our

Their favorite moments of their

their three-year age gap they
didn’t know each other. They both
attended the University of Iowa,
and it was there that their brothers
decided to introduce them.

They got engaged in September

2019 in Scotland. “We went on a
hike to Brother’s Point,” Lexy said.
“At the end of the hike you end up
on a cliff that overlooks the ocean.
However, we were there during
Scotland’s rainy season, so we
had to walk in a marsh and cross
a river all while getting rained on.
The timing was perfect, though,
because just as we got to the top
of the cliff the sun came out and
Jaemin got down on one knee.”
