Deadly Mumbai blasts

T
hree near-simultaneous explosions have shaken Indias commercial capital Mumbai (Bombay), police say. Twenty-one people were killed and 113 injured, said Maharashtra states Chief Minister, Prithviraj Chavan. He called the explosions, during Mumbais busy evening rush-hour, a co-ordinated attack by terrorists. One explosion was reported in the Zaveri Bazaar, another in the Opera House business district and a third in Dadar district in the city centre. Police sources were reported as saying the explosions were caused by home-made bombs. The attacks are the deadliest in Mumbai since November 2008 when 10 gunmen launched a three-day co-ordinated raid in which 166 people were killed. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh denounced the bombings and appealed to Mumbai residents to remain calm and show a united face. US President Obama strongly condemned the outrageous attacks, and offered support to Indias efforts to bring the perpetrators of these terrible crimes to justice. High alert The latest explosions hit the city as workers were making their way home. jewellery market, according to police. A minute later, a second blast hit the busy business district of Opera House, in the exploded in the Dadar area of central Mumbai. Because the explosions occurred within minutes of each other, we infer that this was a co-ordinated attack by terrorists, Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram told reporters. Mumbai had been put on a state of high alert and a commando team was standing by, he

said. Delhi, the capital, Calcutta and several other cities have also been put on alert. Forensics teams have been sent from Delhi and Hyderabad to examine the explosion sites.

The authorities have not yet said who they believe might be behind the explosions and no group has said it carried them out. In Zaveri Bazaar, witnesses described a motorcycle exploding next to a jewellery shop. Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik said a bomb had been left in an abandoned umbrella. Photographer Rutavi Mehta told the reporter he was shopping nearby and heard the explosion. He grabbed his camera and ran to the scene. I took a couple of photographs. I think they might be too graphic for broadcast, he said. Bodies and limbs were strewn everywhere. People were crying and screaming. The area was packed with shoppers at the time of the blast. Few offered assistance to the blood-soaked victims, while others looked on in a state of shock, he said. It was totally chaos. There were pools of blood everywhere. The second and most powerful blast was in the nearby Opera House district. Local media said it was planted inside the twostorey Prasad Chamber building. In the central Dadar district, the bomb tore apart a taxi that was parked next to a bus stop, witnesses said. It was unclear whether the explosives were planted inside the vehicle or in a nearby electricity meter box. I heard a loud explosion. And then I saw people with serious injuries lying in pools of blood, another person told the media. An unexploded bomb was also reportedly been found in Dadar. The choice of locations makes it clear that the blasts were intended to cause maximum

casualties, said Soutik Biswas in Delhi. But footage of one of the blast sites a ripped-off cover of a bus shelter and a car with its glass shattered points to a medium-level and possibly crude explosion, as reported. According to some reports, the blasts came on the birthday of Mohammad Ajmal Amir Qasab, the sole surviving gunman from the 2008 attacks. But court records show his birthday to be in September. Those attacks, which targeted two highend hotels, a busy train station, a Jewish centre and other sites frequented by foreigners, were blamed on the Pakistanbased Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group. Pakistan was quick to condemn the latest explosions, in a statement issued by the foreign ministry. Peace talks between Pakistan and India have only recently resumed since they were broken off after the 2008 attacks. Mumbai has been targeted many times in recent years. As well as the 2008 attacks, co-ordinated blasts on seven of the citys trains on July 11, 2006 caused massive loss of life. More than 180 people were killed and hundreds wounded in those bombings, which were blamed on Islamist militants. The city suffered four bomb attacks during

Canada sTands By IndIa, says TerrorIsM Is alIve and aCTIve

Standing by India in the aftermath of the Mumbai bomb blasts, Canada on Wednesday said terrorism is alive and active and the international community should come together to root out this evil. Sending his condolences, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said, On behalf of all our deep and profound sympathy and condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed and injured by these heinous acts of violence, including Canadians who may have loved ones in Mumbai. The prime minister said the attacks are a stark reminder that terrorism is alive and active around the globe and can strike at any time. All countries need to work together and take necessary precautions to combat the scourge who perpetrate these atrocities. Harper, who had visited Mumbai in November 2009, said Canada remains united with the government and people of India in their fight against terror. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this difficult time. We offer our support as India works to bring to justice those responsible for these cowardly attacks against innocent people. Immigration and Citizenship Minister Jason Kenney, who had visited Mumbai after the 2008 attacks that killed 166 people, said, I can tell you having visited Mumbai shortly after, people were still deeply traumatized. So to see this happen again indicates that the enemies of our democratic values will not relent and it reminds us that the fight against terrorism isnt a passing thing. It is a long-term fight and regrettably, the people of India are on the front lines. The immigration minister said, I am sure that all Canadians are deeply concerned about these attacks, but I suspect there are tens of thousand of Canadian citizens who have relatives or friends in Mumbai and we want them to know that our consular services are certainly alert to the situation. just hosted Bollywoods IIFA awards in Ottawa, was also shocked by the terror attacks in Mumbai. Here in Ontario, we are fortunate to have a community that traces their roots back to India and maintains strong ties with family and friends still there. And on days like this, those ties bring us closer together, through shared grief and resolve to stand up to the forces of hate, the provincial premier said. The Indo-Canada Chamber the terrorist attack on Indias commercial capital. We unequivocally condemn the dastardly attack. On behalf of the chamber, I express profound sympathies with the kith and kin of the deceased and wish speedy recovery for those injured in these attacks, said ICCC president Satish Thakkar. He said the Indo-Canadian community was with the the people of Mumbai and India in their hour of grief.

FIJI reCords reserves

Fijis foreign reserves have reached $1.522billion, the highest that Fiji has ever reached. The Reserve Bank of Fiji says the level of months of imports of goods and non-factor services. higher foreign reserves level provides an adequate buffer for preserving Fijis external stability, in the event of a sharp rise in imports particularly through higher oil and food prices. Whiteside says the comfortable level of reserves has also enabled the RBF to approve all outstanding profit repatriation by commercial banks, as well as raise the limit for offshore investment by the Fiji National Provident Fund.

The different policies and decrees that have been endorsed by Cabinet is part of the new holistic approach taken by government and Minister for Tourism Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum. Tourism is the single biggest revenue earner for Fiji and it is therefore prudent to take steps that not only benefits government coffers but also satisfies the tourists who come to Fiji to relax and enjoy the world famous Fijian hospitality. Over the past few years, tourist numbers have be increasing rapidly showing signs of confidence from visitors to come to Fiji. Tourism is not just about filling the hotel rooms which the approach was taken previously, he said. Tourism is about extracting the tourism spends in the different services. That is very very important. Mr Sayed Khaiyum said the practice done previously went through an overhaul and the new products now are very competitive. Previously it was about filling up the hotel rooms. Tourism is not about filling up the hotel room but how much money they spend in the local economy through handicrafts, rental cars, and visiting villages. Tourism Fiji Chief executive officer Josefa Tuamoto says increase tourist numbers were a sign that products such as the Fiji Me, Kava Me, Romance Me, Pamper Me, Dive Me, and Cruise Me among the many others were hitting the tourists. This is all paying dividends to the though Tourism Fiji which oversees the whole tourism industry and the Ministry of Tourism. I think with the increase in tourists numbers is a result of the products that we the rewards, he said.

students in the Fiji National Universitys Ethics class are dismissible because of their lack of basic linguistic skills, says FNU academic Professor Subramani. In his attempt to determine the cause of this shortfall, Prof Subramani said he approached his students and found they were not proficient in their own vernacular. Parents tell their children they should disregard their own vernacular because learning and speaking English will get them a good future. This is very wrong. Languages do not contradict each other, they complement each other and due to this sort of attitude the Fijian language is in great danger of loss, he said. He said the translation industry was a huge industry however this was not so in Fiji. We need to start this industry to protect and conserve our languages. Changes are needed soon, especially in the educational system, he said.

Fiji plans to conduct its first demographic health surveys in 2012, with the Ministry of Health already rebranding its reproductive health care. Health Minister, Dr Sharma said we needed to have more information/data on reproductive health and find out needs for family spacing and planning to guide in future. World Population Day was celebrated at Novotel Hotel, Lami where regional participants gathered to consult issues of population and development. Dr Sharma said regional countries were part of the global scenarios of food shortages, fuel price rises, economic crisis and climate changes. We in the region are the downstream people who are affected through larger economies. Our limited natural and fiscal resources are being tested and we are way off mark to with barely four years to go, the minister said. We need to revisit our past experiences in family planning and provide reproductive health care in a new package. The policy of the Oxfam model for family planning in Fiji is being refocused and we are reviewing the issue. We need to involve more males on the decision of family size. Dr Sharma said advocacy on abstinence and awareness on protection was vital to create a healthy living environment for our children. We hear repeatedly of young people falling pregnant and high teen-age pregnancy rate which needs to be addressed, he said. In a patriarchal society, we need males to act responsibly and follow human rights and faith-based concepts. An all of society approach must be undertaken as we cannot be dependent on international donors, foreign governments and ministries of health alone.

Folding dinner napkins

the cone napkin Fold

1. Lay the napkin face down in front of you.

2. Fold the napkin in half diagonally.

6. Turn the napkin over, keeping the open ends pointing away from you. 7. Evenly fold the bottom third of the napkin up and press the it down well. An iron may be needed here.

3. Orient the napkin so the open corner faces away from you.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Dr. Bal Gupta, who lost his wife in the 1985 Air India bombing, lay a wreath during the unveiling ceremony of the Air India Memorial in Montreal, Quebec, June 23, 2011. 4. Fold the left-most corner diagonally so the point rests on top of the far corner. 5. Repeat the last step with the right side, bringing this fold evenly along to the last one.

8. Fold both the left and right sides back and underneath the napkin evenly to create the finished product seen here. That looks so nice I bet you just cant wait to smear food on it!

Shri Hanuman Maha Yagna

Lord Hanuman is considered to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva. The son of the Wind-God and Anjani Devi, He is worshiped with great devotion by the Hindus. Shri Hanuman is the epitome of sincere devotion and dedication. He is the living embodiment of the power of Ram Nam. Lord Rama Himself blessed Hanuman and conferred on him the boon All will honor and worship you like Myself. Your idol will be placed at the door of My temple and you will be worshipped and be sung before mine. You will be able to do anything, even that which I will not be able to Such is the power of devotion of Lord Hanuman. Jagajjanani Sita mayya also blessed Hanuman with the boon Asta Siddhi Nava Nidhi ke Daata Asa Vara Deena Janaki Maata One can attain the eight Siddhis and nava Nidhis by worshipping lord Hanuman. A nine day Hanuman maha Yagna will be held at Shree Mahalakshmi Temple, commencing from Sat July 23 to Sun July 31, starting with the traditional Dhwajarohana ceremony. Daily prayers will begin with Ganesha puja at 6pm followed by Shri Hanuman Maha mantra yagna, recitation of Hanuman Chalisa and a discourse highlighting the importance of the worship of Sri Hanuman, especially with relevance to the present day state of living, and a word by word explanation highlight of the evening, participated by each and everyone with great enthusiasm is the Parikrama of Shri Hanuman around the temple premises. The prayer concludes with aarati and mahaprasad. I urge all devotees to join the prayers with family especially with the children. In the present times when children are easily side tracked into all kinds of activities leading to unwanted pain and misery, there is no other power than prayer to Lord Hanuman that can bring positive energy to the body, mind and soul and give are conducted in traditional vedic style at the temple.
