Sun Solid Air Freshener

- What happens to a naphthalene ball when heated?

Ans: When naphthalene ball is heated, it changes
from solid (naphthalene) to gas (vapor) without
passing the liquid form.

-What do you call the process where a solid change
into a gas?
Ans: Sublimation is the process where a solid change
into a gas.

B. Motivation Read the story below:

One day, mom noticed that their toilet smelled a

bit, so she decided to buy a solid air freshener. She
ordered Peter to put the air freshener inside the
comfort room. Peter wondered what that thing was. He
noticed that it was fragrant and smelled pleasant. He
also noticed that it was wrapped inside a container
with holes and wrapped in plastic. He removed the
plastic and noticed that it was hard. He put it back in
the container, covered it and hung it near the mirror.
One day, Peter noticed that the smell of the solid
air freshener had disappeared. He was surprised and
when he opened it, he was shocked that the container
was empty. He asked his mother about it. According to
his mother, the air freshener disappears
spontaneously when it lasts and part of it gets into the
air so the environment becomes fragrant.

Questions:
1. What causes the disappearance of the solid air
freshener?
(Ans: This is due to heat or rising temperature around
it.)

2. In what form is the air freshener?

(Ans: The air freshener is solid.)

3. After some time, what is now the form of the air

freshener?
(Ans: After some time, the air freshener becomes
gas.)

C. Activity The teacher will divide the class into three groups.
Group 1: Look at the items below. Check items that
can sublimate or become gaseous when heated. Write
your answer on the blank provided before each
number.
(See Attachment A)

Group 2: Direction: Examine the following materials.

Will it undergo the process sublimation? Draw a if
it undergoes Sublimation and draw a if it will not.
(See Attachment B)

T-III, Lapong ES
Mabinay District IV
Group 3: Write TRUE if the statement is correct
and FALSE if not. Write your answer on the blank
provided before each number. (See attachment C)

D. Analysis The teacher will let one representative from each

group to discuss their work.
When does solid become gas?
Ans: Solid turns into a gas when it is exposed to high
temperature.

What do we call the phase transition in which a solid

turn into a gas?
Ans: Sublimation is the transition of a substance
directly from the solid to the gas state without passing
through the liquid state.

E. Abstraction The teacher will further discuss the lesson.

All matter can move from one state to another. It
may require extreme temperatures or extreme
pressures, but it can be done. Phase changes happen
when you reach certain special points.
Have you ever wondered what happened to the
air freshener hanged in your toilets? Why was it gone
after several weeks of being left inside the toilet room?
This happens because air fresheners have
chemicals which will directly turn into gas (without
passing through the liquid phase) when exposed to
high temperature. This process is called sublimation.
Sublimation is the transition of a substance
directly from the solid to the gas state without passing
through the liquid state.
From the story that we have read, we see that
the solid air freshener has disappear after some time.
The heat causes other solids such as air fresheners to
disappear. Due to the increase in temperature caused
by heat, particles go from being close-packed and
ordered in a solid to separated and disordered in a
gas. Solid air fresheners, including those hanging in
toilet, all sublime. This is how the chemicals get
directly into the air and make it smell so fresh. It
changes from solid to gas.
Teacher may present a video about sublimation
(solid to gas) for further discussion and understanding
of the lesson using this link
https://youtu.be/7joDJ1FbVq8

F. Application Divide the class into three groups.

Group 1: Finish the following sentences using the

words below. (See Attachment D)

Group 2: Draw a star if the following sentences

is correct and a sun if it is not correct.
Put your answer on the blank provided
before each number. (See Attachment E)

Group 3: Draw 3 examples of materials that change

from solid to gas that can be found in your home.

G. Practical Applications Give some applications or situations showing

of Concepts and Skills that a solid is changed to gas when heated.
in Daily Living Ans: Several examples of solid to gas change that
may be found in everyday life, including:
-solid toilet deodorizers
-Solid air fresheners
-Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide)
-iodine crystals

H. Generalization -What do you call the process where a solid change

into a gas?
Ans: Sublimation is the process where a solid change
into a gas.

Remember:
-Phase change can happen when the temperature of
the material is increased.
- Sublimating happen by increasing the temperature of
the material.
-Solids can changed into gases by sublimating.

I. Evaluation (See Attachment F)

J. Additional activities for Answer this question in your Science notebook:
