Tutorial 3

1. Fig. 1 shows a 1 m long shaft with an outer diameter of 50 mm and a 40 mm

diameter hole drilled to half its length. Determine the:

(a) torque distribution

(b) maximum shearing stress
(c) angle of twist of the tip with respect to the fixed end

The shear modulus is 80 GPa.

2. A solid cylindrical shaft of diameter d and length L is built in at both ends and is
subjected to a torque To at a distance a from one end as shown in Fig. 2. What are
the reactions at the built-in ends? Sketch how the angle of twist varies along the
shaft.

3. For the stress state on an element, thus:

 x  6 GPa,  y  2 GPa,  xy  3 GPa
(a) Determine the stresses acting on a surface whose normal is at an angle of 150
counter-clockwise from the x-axis.
(b) Draw an element in the plane in (a) indicating all the stresses acting on it.
(c) Establish the orientation of surfaces where the shear stresses are zero and hence
determine the maximum and minimum principal stresses.
(d) Establish the orientation of surfaces where the shear stress is a maximum and
determine the stress state at these surfaces.

4. A thin-walled cylindrical tank has a diameter of 1 m and thickness t  10 mm is

subjected to an internal pressure p of 300 kPa and is simultaneously subjected to a
torsional moment T of 15 kNm as shown in Fig. 3. Calculate the principal stresses
and the maximum in-plane shear stress in the tank. Stresses in a cylinder due to
internal pressure p,  t  pR / t ,  a   t / 2 . The shear stress in a thin-walled
cylinder due to a torque, T, is given by   T /(2R 2 t ), where R and t are radius and
thickness of the cylinder ( t  R ).

5. Fig. 4 shows a mass of 45 kg suspended from a wire of diameter d  2 mm. A

torque of T  200 Nmm is simultaneously applied to the wire. Using the Mohr’s
circle determine:
a) the stresses on an element inclined at 300 clockwise to the y-axis;
b) the maximum in-plane shearing stresses;
c) the maximum and minimum principal stresses and their directions. Indicate
your results on a sketch showing the magnitudes of the stresses and their
directions with respect to the x-axis.

6. The strain state at a point on a component was found to be:

 x  255 106 ,  y  60  106 ,  xy  130 106

Using a Mohr's circle of strain or otherwise determine

(a) the strain referred to a set of axes x'-y' which is rotated 300 counter-clockwise
relative to the original x-y axes;
(b) the magnitude and direction of the principal strains;
(c) the maximum shear strain and the normal strains associated with it.
