(Semester 1: AY2021/2022)

Time Allowed : 1 Hour

___________________________________________________________________________

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS:

1. This quiz contains TWO (2) questions and comprises THREE (3) pages.

2. You are required to answer ALL TWO (2) questions.

3. This is an OPEN-BOOK ASSESSMENT.

4. Write your answers on A4 size paper and your Student Number on the top of the first
page.

Question 1

Figure Q1 shows a frame structure supporting a mass of 100 kg from one end of cable that
goes around a 1 m radius frictionless pulley of mass 30 kg. Member AE and member BD are
joined at C by a pin. A distributed load with a linearly varying intensity from 0 at A to 20
N/m at F acts on segment AF. Neglect the weight of the bars, and assume gravitational
acceleration to be g  10 m/s 2 . (i) Determine the support reactions at A and B. (ii) Find the
horizontal and vertical components of the force at joint C.

Question 2

Figure Q2 shows a vertical hollow square column made of a perfectly rigid material. The
column contains a linearly elastic material with a Young’s modulus of 8 GPa, a shear
modulus of 3.1 GPa, and a Poisson’s ratio of 0.3. A vertical compressive force F is applied
uniformly across only the material within the rigid column.

(a) What state of stress and what state of strain does the material within the column
experience? (Consider definitions and do not guess.)
(2 marks)

(b) The height of the material in the column before compression is 400 mm, and after the
force is applied, the height of the material reduces to 398 mm. Calculate the stress state
in the material and express the values of the stress components in matrix form
according to:
