ROCK UNDER STRESS

Name: ___________________________________________ Section: ____________________

Learning Competency
Describe how rocks behave under different types of stress such as
compression, pulling apart and shearing (MELC S11/12ES-Ic-19).

Specific Objectives:
1. Differentiate the types of stress.
2. Give examples of each type of stress.
3. Create your own rocks behavior under the different types of stress.

Time Allotment: 2 hours

Key Concepts
 Rocks are subjected to different types of stress and they respond
differently under different conditions. Stress on rocks is a force that
creates deformation or changes in the rocks’ shape and volume.

Types of Stress
Stress Description Example Illustration
Compression A type of stress Rocky
(squeezing) where rocks are Mountains
pushed together or
tend to compress
each other. There is
a tendency for the
rock to be pressed or
squeezed, causing Figure 1. Compressional stress

fracture (break).
Compressional
stress is the most
common stress at
convergent plate
boundaries.

Tension This is a type of Continent
(stretching) stress where rocks is the best
move away from example;
