Abacus A5- QUICK SET UP and RUN INSTRUCTIONS

1. SET UP
Select suitable location and connect solutions as below:

N.B. For reliable operation and to provide a safe working environment please
ensure that the table/bench supporting is strong and stable enough to support the
weight and size of the analyzer and accessories. (e.g. optional autosampler)

UNPACKING AND INSTALLATION


1. Remove analyzer from shipping carton and check for any signs of visible damage. Check
accessory pack against packing list. If anything is missing contact provider/supplier.

2. If you have the optional autosampler please remove from shipping box carefully. Check
contents against packing list. If anything is missing contact provider/supplier.

3. Ensure that is sufficient space for the analyzer and any peripherals on level well-
supported surface in well–ventilated location avoiding exposure to direct sunlight or
near to potential interfering devices( e.g. Centrifuges or fans)

Powering up the A5 ANALYZER SET-UP


N.B. If the analyzer is being operated multiple operators is important to make a visual
inspection of the system before use.

Checks include the following:

 Check that reagent tubes are connected correctly and not loose
 Check that power cords are connected to the analyzer (and autosampler, if needed)
 Open the front cover to ensure that there are no leakages around shear valve and
syringes
 Check for any salt stains around tubing and reagent containers
 Empty waste container and reset the waste level in the Main
menu/Diagnostics/Reagent status panel
To power up the Abacus 5 analyzer
1. Turn on main power switch to the up positions “1” on the rear panel located near the
power connection
2. If the optional autosampler is installed, turn on the power position using switch on
right of unit.
3. Turn on printer or any other peripherals
To start the user interface
1. Press on the standby power switch near top of rear panel. N.B. The standby switch
springs back down after activation.
2. This starts the following sequence of events
a) The internal computer starts
b) The embedded MS Windows SW starts up and the display initializes a color change
in the screen
c) The screen displays the A5 logo screen and start-up status is displayed in the
bottom right corner of the logo.
d) If in multi-user option is enabled a user ID 7 password is required
e) The Abacus 5 main menu is displayed
f) The screens below are shown

2) Running a sample measurement


a) Before making a sample measurement ensure there is an acceptable instrument blank
n.b. An instrument blank should be performed in the following circumstances:
1. Once a day prior to any sample analysis
2. After the analyzer hasn’t been used for more than 3 hours
3. After any reagent change or analyzer service/repair
b) To perform a blank measurement

 In main menu select Measure


then New Sample
 Press Blank to perform a blank
cycle
 After 1 minute the blank results
will be displayed
 If the blank results are within
the ranges, press accept

 If any parameter is outside range
press re-blank key
 When blank is acceptable press
Back to measure menu

To run a sample measurement follow the process below.

 Mix sample thoroughly, inverting the


sample tube 8-10 times
(Do not shake as this can cause
bubbles and inaccurate results!)
 From main menu select Measure, then
New Sample.
 In the adapter on the sample rotor
 Put sample into the adapter and open
tube if necessary.
 Select sample profile( Human, male,
female etc)
 Identify the sample either manually or
via hand held bar code reader if fitted.
 Push Run key on display

After 1 minute the analyzer will display


the results in the screen as below.
Following options are available.

 Print the results by pressing Print


button
 Return to measurement panel by
tapping Back button
 Run a new sample by pressing
New Sample button
 Re-run the sample by pressing Re-
run button
 If a mistake is made or an error
message is displayed, press
Discard key and the measurement
record will be deleted from the
database.

3) Analyzer Shutdown and Turning the system off


When all sample testing has been completed there will be displayed the following exit
options:

 A5 Shut down
 A5 Powering off
 Preparing Abacus 5 for shipment

 Click on the Exit icon on main menu


to access exit options.

 Click on Cancel button to return to


normal operation
