SUGGESTED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR DEMONSTRATION
WITH ORAL QUESTIONING

1. What is the difference between root pass, filling pass and capping?
ANSWER:
 Root pass is the first single pass weld bead deposited on the base
metal at the joint
 Filling pass/es is/are succeeding passes after the root pass
 Capping is the top weld bead pass

2. What is the purpose of inert gas in FCAW?

ANSWER: To prevent contamination of the molten weld puddle which can cause
porosity

3. What effect does wind velocity has on the weld?

ANSWER: High wind velocity causes weld defect (porosity).

4. Name at least four kinds of weld discontinuities.

ANSWER:
 Incomplete fusion
 Undercut
 Overlap
 Underfill
 Incomplete joint penetration
5. What are the welding parameters that must be maintained to produce quality
weld?
ANSWER:
 Current setting
 Length of arc
 Angle of electrode
 Manipulation of the electrode
 Speed of travel
6. Name at least four types of distortions in weldments.
ANSWER:
 Longitudinal shrinkage
 Transverse shrinkage
 Angular distortion
 Bowing
 Buckling
 Twisting

7. Why are clamps and/or restraints used in welding?
ANSWER: To prevent or minimize distortion

8. What are the causes of poor penetration and incomplete fusion?

ANSWER:
 Insufficient root gap
 Welding current too low

9. What causes slag inclusion and undercut?

ANSWER:
 Thorough cleaning of weld causes slag inclusion
 Correct adjustment of current

10. What must be undertaken to rectify partial joint penetration?

ANSWER: Perform back gouging and weld from the other side

11. What must be done to prevent the formation of fumes and gases?
ANSWER:
 Do not weld on dirty metal or metal contaminated by unknown material
 Remove all paint and galvanized coating before welding
12. In welding work, how can electric shocks be prevented?
ANSWER:
 Ground all electrical equipment and the workpiece
 Use the recommended cable size
 Make sure all electrical connections are tight, clean and dry
 Keep work area, equipment and clothing dry at all times
 Keep cables and connectors in good condition at all times
 Avoid open-circuit voltage
 Wear insulated gloves when adjusting equipment
 Follow safety standards
