SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE COMPETENCY ASSESSOR
Provide the candidate for the necessary tools, equipment, supplies and
materials. The plates to be welded must be beveled before the
assessment. (Please refer to List of Tools, Materials and Equipment)
Provide the Candidate with a copy of the Instruction for Demonstration.
Allow the Demonstration to be performed within 1 ½ hours.
Ensure that the Candidate FULLY understands the instruction prior
proceeding to the performance of the task.
Allow 15 minutes for the candidate to familiarize him/herself with the
resources to be used in this demonstration.
Ensure that the Candidate is wearing appropriate personal protective
equipment before allowing him/her to proceed with the task.
4. At the end of the assessment, you shall provide the candidate feedback on the
assessment results. The feedback shall indicate whether the candidate is.

1. What is the difference between root pass, filling pass and capping?
ANSWER:
Root pass is the first single pass weld bead deposited on the base
metal at the joint
Filling pass/es is/are succeeding passes after the root pass
Capping is the top weld bead pass

7. Why are clamps and/or restraints used in welding?
ANSWER: To prevent or minimize distortion
11. What must be done to prevent the formation of fumes and gases?
ANSWER:
Do not weld on dirty metal or metal contaminated by unknown material
Remove all paint and galvanized coating before welding
12. In welding work, how can electric shocks be prevented?
ANSWER:
Ground all electrical equipment and the workpiece
Use the recommended cable size
Make sure all electrical connections are tight, clean and dry
Keep work area, equipment and clothing dry at all times
Keep cables and connectors in good condition at all times
Avoid open-circuit voltage
Wear insulated gloves when adjusting equipment
Follow safety standards
