II. Background Information

A. Child Background:

Mercied is a very dependable child. She could manage to do tasks at home

without supervision. She is the eldest daughter of the Nonong Family. Being
aware of her economic hardship, Mercied help her mother in scavenging specially
during weekends.

She comes from a broken family. She even have witness how her mother
almost died when her father forcefully choke her mother’s neck the last time
they quarreled. She is very specific on her right especially when some of her
classmates would ridicule her of what happened to her family. At school, she
performs her tasks very well. She is very persistent on her studies.

According to the child, when she was young, her father loved her. He would
even carry her when he comes home from work. However, during her late
elementary years, her father would go home very late in the evening, drunk and
seeking trouble. This time, she started to fear her father. One time, when her
mother was out in the church, Placido arrived in their home drunk. He destroyed
their house and collected the roof and bamboo flooring. Placido said he would
make another house and use these things for it. Mercied feel so afraid of the
happening. She also heard him (Placido) shouting bad words towards her
mother, even cried he’ll kill her.

At school, Mercied expressed she could not concentrate with her lessons. She
always thought of what might have been happening in their home. It might be
that her father is drunk again and might be harassing her mother. After the
class, she would hurry home thinking of her mother and their house and the
misery their father might have been done to them. There was even some time
when Mercied’s sibling and her mother sleep with her in grasslands for fear that
they might be attacked by her father if they stay in the house.

Presently, Mercied feel peace of mind and have tried to cope up with her
studies well. She express that she prefers to live away from her father and never
would she wish to live with him again.

B. Family Background and Relationships:

Mrs. Merlyn Nonong presently lives with her two children in a house they
personally built after her separation with Placido Jr., a year past. She is a native
of the municipality of Polanco, Zamboanga del Sur. She is a daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Maximo and Ambrosia Dalogdog.

Year 1985, after her older sister became pregnant before marriage, her
father decided to arrange her marriage with a prominent person in their locality.
Though out of her will, the marriage with Bernardo Dalman happened. The
newly married couple, however, does not live together. She ran back to her
family while great anger towards her father lived through her. After more than a
year, Merlyn received a letter from a soldier, Alfredo Sebastian, proposing his
love. His father heared about it and again, arranged their connection. She feared
of a gun and hate soldier. On time, while sleeping in aunt’s house, she stood
feeling a rifle on her shoulder. She felt shock and fainted. She was raped by the
soldier. Later she discovered that the incident was a connivance with her father
who received payment in exchange of her. That time, her anger towards her
father even worsens. She even had tied herself to a tree for a suicide several
times. Meanwhile, they lived as a common-law couple. Afraid of the marriage she
had with Bernardo Dalman, they forcefully moved to Cotabato City. She
expressed that every time they had sex, she is tied on the bed. Two sons has
been a product of that relationship. She does not even have freedom with him.
After six years, Oct. 17, 1994, she discovered that the gate was left open by
Alfredo so she decided to run out and left her two sons. She goes back to
Polanco. To forget this sad experience, her aunt, Narcesa Calimpong, accompany
her to live in Brgy. Sangkol, Dipolog City. There she meets Placido.

Mercied’s father, Placido Nonong Jr., is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Placido
Nonong Sr. and a native of Sangkol, Dipolog. He was raised in a poor family. His
father is a coconut farmer. He could be seen drinking and gambling after the
days work.

More than month of her stay in Sangkol, Placido proposed a marriage with
her. She revealed everything about what happened to her. However, Placido
and his family accept her, except his mother. Despite this, they pursued the plan.
At first, they lived happily. However, Merlyn discovered that marriage with
Bernardo Dalman was not registered/fake. She pursued their marriage with
Placido on February 13, 2003 at RTC branch 6, Hall of Justice, Dipolog City and
on March 23, 2003 at Polanco Parish Church. After marriage, she noticed that
Placido somewhat changed. He got home very late in the evening, drunk and
always seeks trouble. He harassed Merlyn especially in bed. She was forced to
have sex even it is against her will. Having this kind of situation, Merlyn was
reminded of the past experiences she had especially with Alfredo. They would
start to quarrel. The last quarrel they had seemed to be the most terrible for her.
Placido choked her neck which resulted to deafness (until presently) of her left
ear.

Presently, Merced’s parents finally separated. The barangay issued him a

pledge that once he goes near the house of Merlyn again, she would immediately
be put into prison. Merlyn built a house with the assistance of her co-religions
near the residence of a Barangay councilor so that Placido could not easily attack
them. However, Placido’s house is built nearby the house of Merlyn. Mrs. Merlyn
Nonong hatred against Placido is so intense this time that she even expresses
desire either to kill Placido or go for revenge if ever he would go to their house
again. During intake, Merlyn express that she is asking God to take away her
anger and hatred towards her husband which for her, seemed to be the hardest
thing to do and overcome. She even added that this time, all she wants to
happen is live away from Placido and forget what he have done to her. She wish
that Placido would leave there place or she with her children will go to other
places. She said, she does not like to raise her children seeing their father
around because she knows that this would only remind them of Placido’s evilness
towards them. She heard one time that her son, now, 10 years old, express
desire to kill his father when he grow up. This is the worst thing she does not
want to happen.

III. Social Assessment of the Direct Worker:

Assessment of the Child

Merceid express desire to live harmoniously with mother and siblings away
from her father. This implies that the child’s hatred and anger against her father
still exists. While she possesses anger and hatred, she is still adequately
functional as she disposes her tasks at home and at school. Her manifestation of
aggressiveness seldom occurs and is controllable. On this venue, the child needs
to undergo series of counseling sessions to ease her burdens of anger and
hatred towards her father.

The prevailing experiences of the child also impinge effect on the

study/performance of the child in school. The child has express she could not
concentrate on her lessons. The center could provide motivational activities for
the child to enhance her willingness towards study.

Below is the psychosocial matrix of the child.

As stated in the background and relationship of the family, the following

point has been noted for further intervention and help:

The past experiences of Mrs. Merlyn Nonong has always accounted for the
dysfunctionalities of how she deal with her husband in particular. In times of
there sexual activity, Merlyn still is still reminded of her past experiences
especially on how she is raped by Alfredo Sebastian several times. These critical
events have impinged adverse serious effects on Merlyn’s relationships with
husband. This makes Merlyn unhappy anymore with the sexual activity they are
doing. Merlyn even state this as one of the primary reason why she does not
want to live with Placido anymore.

The family’s present situation is also brought about by the dysfunctional

behavior of Mr. Placido Nonong Jr., who seemed to have never given anything to
the family rather than problems. At the early part of marriage of the parents,
Placido never gave anything to the family such as those that could sustain their
needs. Mother express, that even at her first delivery of baby, (when she is
pregnant with Mercied), Merlyn would prepare everything for the coming out of
the baby such as cloths, milk, even for her food. Even a single peso has never
been introduced to her as a sign of responsible husband or father.

As assessed, Merlyn is marginally functional considering the impact of the

sexual, physical, emotional, and economic abuse she had encountered. Merlyn
continue to normally perform as mother and provider. However, her feeling of
hatred and anger towards her abusers still persists and continue to manifest in
the display of her inappropriate behavior such as being aggressive and
sometimes submissive. For this reason, this direct worker found a need to
provide Merlyn with series of psychotherapy and counseling sessions to heal her
wound. Moreover, she also needs medial assistance to cure her impaired hearing
as a result of choking. The center could also provide venues for Merlyn to sustain
her independent living vis-à-vis her will of separation with husband.
Below is the social assessment matrix of Merlyn.
