Independence of Cuenca…
Cuenca Independence
On November 3, 1820, the independence of Cuenca was proclaimed, the authorities
did not receive support because they decided to hand over arms. The patriots, amid
exclamations of freedom and joy, travel from El Vecino until they reach the Central
Plaza. The patriots proclaim Cuenca as a Republic but independence did not last long.

After achieving independence, the patriots proclaimed the Republic of Cuenca, which
unfortunately only lasted until December 20, 1820. On this date, the great battle
between patriots and Spaniards took place, who had reorganized and reinforced
themselves, giving the Spaniards the victorious result, taking Cuenca again. Cuenca fell
into the hands of the Spaniards again, but two years later Simón Bolívar sent
Colombian reinforcements under the command of General Antonio José de Sucre
where the definitive Battle was carried out on May 24, 1822 where it would be the
definitive independence of some cities including Cuenca. .
