Interviewer : In today's programme, we are going to learn about learning. With us is a professor from
Cairo University: Dr Fareeda. She has just read a book about people's intelligence. Do you want to
talk to us about the book doctor?
Dr. Fareeda: Yes, I do. Thank you. The book was written by an American professor.
Interviewer : Wasn't it written in 1980s?
Dr. Fareeda: Yes, it was, but the book is still very important for us today. We usually call a person
intelligent when they study hard and pass their exams, but the professor understood that people do
not all learn in the same way.
Interviewer : Did he think that people were intelligent in different ways?
Dr. Fareeda: Yes, he did. He said that people could be intelligent in eight different ways.
Interviewer : Aren't people intelligent if they can read and write well?
Dr. Fareeda: Yes they are. However, some people have problems reading and writing. This does not
mean they aren't intelligent. For example, they might be intelligent because they are good at
numbers. We are all different. Another kind of person is intelligent because they are good at
understanding visual things such as maps and pictures. And another is intelligent because they are
good at understanding sounds and music.
Interviewer : Hm! Can you tell us the other four ways that people are intelligent?
Dr. Fareeda: Yes, I can. Some people are intelligent because they understand plants, animals and the
weather. Some are intelligent because they can use their body to do things. For example, surgeons.
Others can understand people and how they're feeling. And finally, some people are intelligent
because they can understand their own abilities.
Interviewer : Should we teach everyone in a different way then?
Dr. Fareeda: That would be very difficult. However, it's important for students and teachers to remember
that we are not all the same. People all learn in a different way.
Interviewer : Thank you professor. That was very interesting. Will you talk to us again or in another
programme?
Dr. Fareeda: Yes, I will. Interviewer : Thank you.

(C) Reading Comprehension and Set Books
5) Read the following passage, then answer the questions:
It was believed that being overweight was healthy, but nowadays Few people agree to tins
viewpoint. While many people are fighting the battle to reduce weight, studies are being performed
concerning appetite and how it is controlled by both emotional and biochemical factors. Some of the
conclusions of these studies may give us the ability to understand how to deal with weight problems.
For example, when several people were asked about their eating habits ill times of stress, 44 %
said they reacted to stressful situations by eating. Further investigations of both humans and animals
indicated that it is not food which relieves tension, but rather the act of chewing. A test showed that
extremely fat people have a high sense of taste, and love more flavoured food than thin people. When
deprived of the variety of tastes, extremely fat people are not satisfied and consequently eat more.
To fulfill this need. Exercise has been recommended as an important pail of weight-loss
programmes. However, it has been round out that mild exercise is a way of losing weight because using
the stairs instead of the lift is better in the long run than taking on a severe programme such as running
slowly (jogging). Many people find jogging difficult to continue over long periods of time, it also
increases appetite.
A) Answer the following questions:
1- What is the main idea of the passage ?
2- What is the best treatment for overweight, according to the writer's point of view ?
3- What are the two kinds of exercises that help lose weight ?
4- How does eating relieve tension ?
