First paper
Time : One hour and half 21 Marks
A- Writing(8 Marks)
1) Write an essay of not less than two paragraphs, of not less than 18
sentences on ONE only of the following:
Students are asked to write not less than 18 sentences on one of the given topics.

B- Language Function (6Marks)


2) Write a dialogue of at least SIX Exchanges on the following situation :
Students are asked to write a dialogue of Six (6) exchanges (each one should
speak six times on a given situation). No marks are given for greetings and
farewells (One mark for each exchange)

C- Reading comprehension (7 Marks)


3)Read the following passage and answer the questions:
A text of about 250 words is provided. Students are asked to answer (4) open-
ended questions and (3) MCQs. (One mark each). Theses questions should
test the following reading comprehension skills: scanning, skimming for the main
ideas and inference, critical thinking and word recognition.

A- Vocabulary and structure (13Marks)
1) Choose the correct word(s)in brackets: (8 M)
Sixteen items are provided (8 vocabulary & 8 structure). Students are asked to

The River Nile runs in Africa.
3-Programs and timetables.‫البرامج وجداول المواعيد‬
The train to Cairo leaves at 6 a.m. every day.

Form:
I-We-They-You / plural ‫ → جمع‬Verb
He- She -It / singular‫ → مفرد‬Verb + ( s / es / ies )
Notice:
• Verbs ending in (ss / sh / ch / x / o)take (es)in the third person
singular(he – she – it)

Adverbs of frequency ‫ ظروف التكرار‬: (always – usually – sometimes – often


– rarely –scarcely – seldom – never – frequently – occasionally …..etc. )
We use adverbs of frequency:
with the present simple to say how often something happens
I often play tennis on Fridays.
She never helps her mum in the kitchen.

Notes:
1- We use the adverbs of frequency before the main verbs
(visit –drink – wash…………..etc)
Ex:- We sometimes watch TV. He always plays table tennis.
2- We also use the adverbs of frequency after "verb to be "and after
auxiliary verbs such as can , do, must, etc
e.g: Sama is always on time. I can always swim alone.

Passive: Object + am/is/are + p.p


Cotton is grown in Egypt.

The present continuous tense

(The present progressive)


‫زمن المضارع المستمر‬
Use :
1- To talk about actions happening at the moment of speaking:
)‫يعبر عن األحداث التي تحدث أثناء الكالم (األن‬
I’m listening to the radio now.
Listen! Mum is calling you.
2- To talk about future arrangements: ‫يعبر عن ترتيبات مستقبلية‬
We are meeting our new manager at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
They are flying to London next week.
3- To describe temporary situations. ‫للتعبير عن مواقف مؤقتة‬
I'm staying with my aunt at the moment.
4. To talk about annoying actions which happen repeatedly (with the
adverbs of frequency always, constantly, continually). ‫أحداث مزعجة‬
You're always interrupting me!
5- To describe situations which are changing or developing around
the present time.‫مواقف متغيرة حاليا‬
Air pollution is increasing in our city.

Form:
I → am + V+ing
He- she – It – Singular (‫ → )مفرد‬is + V+ing
We- They – you – Plural (‫ → )جمع‬are + V+ing

Notice:
- With verbs ending with (e), we omit (e) on adding (ing)

Certain stative verbs can be used in progressive tenses when they express
actions rather than states but with a difference in meaning:

• think(= consider) ‫يفكر في‬ I'm thinking of buying a car.

• have(= drink, eat, take) ‫ يأخذ‬/‫يتناول‬
Mr Ahmed is having lunch at the cafeteria at the moment.
• taste(= try food) ‫يتذوق‬ I'm just tasting the food to see if it's ready.
• feel (= touch) ‫يلمس‬ Amgad is feeling the surface to repaint it.

Passive: Object + am/is/are + being + p.p


The room is being painted at the moment.

Present Perfect Simple tense

- for actions which happened in the past, but the exact time is not
mentioned. ‫لألحداث التي حدثت في الماضي وال نعلم متى حدثت‬
I've already done that.
- for actions which started in the past and continue up to the present
(emphasis on the action). )‫لألحداث التي بدأت في الماضي واستمرت لألن (للتأكيد على الحدث‬
Alaa has had his car since September.

- for actions that happened in the past and finished, but the results are
obvious in the present. ‫لألحداث التي تمت ولها نتائج أو أثار حاليا‬
Ahmed has washed his car. (it's clean now)

- for recently completed actions. )‫لألحداث التي تمت مؤخرا (من فترة قريبة‬
We have just finished dinner.

- with adjectives in the superlative form and expressions like the only/ first/

The present perfect progressive
‫المضارع التام المستمر‬

use

- to emphasise the duration of a state or action which started in the past


and continues up to the present. ‫لألحداث التي بدأت في الماضي ومازالت مستمرة حاليا‬
Sama has been learning English for 11 years.
- for actions which happened over a period of time in the past and may
have finished, but the results are obvious in the present.
‫لألحداث التي استمرت لفترة زمنية في الماضي وربما تكون انتهت ولكن النتائج واضحة حاليا‬
We've been walking around all day. That's why we're so tired.

- to show annoyance resulting from a recent action. ‫إلظهار الضيق من حدث قريب‬
Who has been wearing my jacket?

Notice:
We use the Present Perfect Simple to emphasise the result of an action. Or
to emphasise the duration of an action.
‫نستخدم املضارع التام البسيط للتأكيد على النتيجة أم املضارع التام املستمر فنستخدمه للتأكيد على مدة احلدث‬

I've called him three times this morning.


I've been calling him since 9 o'clock.

Alfred Nobel, the great Swedish inventor, was a man of many contrasts.
He was the son of a bankrupt, but became a millionaire, a scientist with love of
literature, he made a fortune but lived a simple life, and although cheerful in
company he was often sad in private. A lover of mankind, he never had a wife
or family to love him, a loyal son of his native land, he died alone on foreign
country. He invented new explosive, dynamite, to improve the peace time
industries of mining and road building, but saw it used as a weapon of war to
kill and injure his fellowmen.
He had never been to school or university but studied privately and by
the time he was twenty, was skilful chemist and excellent linguist, speaking
Swedish, German, Russian, French and English. Like his father, Alfred Nobel
was imaginative , but he had better luck in business. But Nobel's main concern
was never with making money or even with making scientific discoveries; he
was always searching for a serious interest in literature and philosophy. He
cared deeply about the whole of mankind; He was always generous to the
poor. " I'd rather takes care of the stomachs of the living than the glory of the
dead. He once said. His greatest wish however was to see an end to wars,
and peace between nations, and he spent much of his time and money
working for this cause until his death in Italy in 1896. His famous will in which
he left money to provide prizes for outstanding work in physics, Chemistry,
Medicine, Literature and peace, is a memorial to his interests and ideals. So
he is remembered and respected long after his death.
