ART CRITICISM OF LAKE SIDE

Art is an expression of our thoughts, feelings, intuitions, and wishes, but it is also about
sharing how we see the world, which is an extension of our personalities for many. It is the exchange
of delicate ideas that cannot be adequately conveyed by words alone. And, because words alone are
insufficient, we must find another way to communicate our message. However, the materials we use
on or in our chosen medium are not art in and of themselves. Art may be found in how a medium is
used and how a message is communicated. Let us also have a look at one artwork done by a local
artist here in Ormoc City.
Lake Side is an artwork made by a local artist here in Ormoc City, Audie Estrellada. The
artwork is made using oil in canvas with a dimension 11” x 17”. The artwork made by Audie
Estrellada is inspired by a popular destination here in Ormoc, the Lake Danao. In his artwork, we can
see the wholeness of the lake on a sided perspective which fits the title “Lake Side’ or in the words,
the side of the lake. In his artwork, we can see the lake, some floating cottages, a tree and grasses.
Those elements present in the artwork and which I also have mentioned are the ones he made used
to represent the completeness of his artwork, “Lake Side”.
The artwork of Audie Estrellada, “Lake Side” is composed of different art elements and
principle. The overall subject and the genre are easily noticeable in his artwork. Furthermore, the art
elements that are present in this artwork are lines, shape, form, space and color. For the lines,

horizontal, diagonal and expressive lines are all present in this piece. For the horizontal line, we can
see it on the center between the lake and the ground. The diagonal and expressive lines can be seen
on the somewhat falling tree and its leaves. Also, both geometric and organic shapes are present,
from the triangular shape used in the cottages and the way the leaves are shaped. Form element is
also present, specifically both the organic and geometric shape. The space is also used specifically
the linear perspective where as the objects such as the cottages gets smaller as it gets closer with
the vanishing point creating a sense of deep space. Lastly, is the element of color where the artist
has made use of analogous color specifically blue and green and a warm color for the tree. Moreover,
the principles of design are also accustomed in this artwork. Specifically, the principles present are
balance, contrast, gradation, movement and unity. Asymmetrical balance is presented in this artwork
in a way that the right side of the piece contains more subjects compared to the other side. Principle
of contrast is used with contrasting sizes of elements. Gradation is seen on the sizes of objects as it
gets smaller as it reaches a vanishing point creating a linear perspective. Principle of movement is
seen by the position of the tree that is positioned as if it is falling on the side. Lastly, for the principle
of unity, it is seen in a way that though different elements and principles are present, the wholeness
and completeness of the artwork was still achieved.
Moreover, the subject of this artwork by Audie Estrellada is the lakeside itself as implied from
the title. We can easily identify the subject through the things present: the lake, tree, cottages and the
forest-like ambiance. Also, the genre of this artwork is landscape as it shows the physical
environment of a specific place which is the popular Lake Dano of Ormoc City. It shows pure
landscape without the presence of any human figure. Furthermore, the subject of this artwork is
considered to be an objective or representational one because it presents an actual object from
reality. The content of this artwork also do contains the different level of meanings which are the
factual, conventional and the subjective meaning. Finally, the very last art component this artwork
features is the art era or movement it mimics; because it shows a real-life topic, this artwork reflects
the realism art period.
Audie Estrellada is a naturally gifted visual artist. His artworks are wide-ranged and multi-
farious: still life, landscapes, seascapes, figures, human interest, cultural and values-oriented themes
and landmarks. This painting above was inspired by Ormoc’s top tourist destination, Lake Danao.
This piece is displayed in the New Art Museum in Ormoc City. He decided to choose Lake Danao as
his inspiration to his artwork because it will show how great of a place our city is. Through this,
audience can see how much of a great travel destination Ormoc City can be especially this place,
Lake Danao, a guitar-shaped lake covering an area of 148 hectares (370 acres).
“Lake Side” is a great piece from Audie Estrellada. This piece shows that our city is a tourism
rich place. This artwork will help boost the tourism of our city and could strengthen Ormoc’s

reputation. Also, this piece can help Ormoc find more investors that will help in maintaining the
greatness of all the travel destinations found in our city including the inspiration of this piece, Lake
Danao. Finally, all of the painting's components and thoughts match and complement the whole
visual art in a logical and harmonious manner. The topic and concept are expressed in a clear,
simple, and simplest manner. In conclusion, Audie Estrellada's artwork "Lake Side" is a great work of
art that conveys its message, achieves its purpose, and validates its creation.
