EXPERIMENT -3

Aim
Finding the height of the bulb

Theory

Law of reflection states that angle of incidence is equal to angle of

reflection. Hence ∠ACN =∠ECN. Hence, ∠ACB = ∠ECD.

Formulas Used:
1 1 1
 f = v −u
'
h −v
 m= =
h u
Observations:
 The observation table for the first experiment is as follows:

Y (CD) (cm) X (BC) (cm)

52 50.5

58.5 59

67 72

95 112.5

118 147

 The corresponding graph is as follows:

 The slope of the graph is 1.47.

 Using this information and the height of the observer the height of the
bulb was determined as 250.49 cm.
 The actual height of the bulb was measured as 255.5 cm.

V U H’ H’/H -v/u
(cm) (cm) (cm)
2.1 2.1
-14.8 7.5 10.8
2.2 2.1
-15.4 7.3 11.5
2.3 2.2
-16.1 7.2 11.8
2.3 2.5
-17.0 6.7 12.0
2.4 2.4
-18.0 7.5 12.5

 The value of h was determined to be 5.2 cm.

 Thus, the corresponding graph for h’ / h and v / u is as follows:

 Thus, the value of magnification was determined to be

 The observation table for the third part is as follows:
 For red Light:
V U F
(cm) (cm) (cm)
25.6 -4.8 4.04

21.6 -5.5 4.30

31.7 -4.6 4.02

48.3 -4.8 4.37

 For Blue Light:
V U F
(cm) (cm) (cm)
11.2 -6.8 4.23

16.7 -5.8 4.30

18.6 -5.6 4.30

26.9 -5.1 4.28

 Using the formula as mentioned above, the values of the focal lengths
for red and blue light were determined.

Inferences:
 Using the law of reflection and using the property of similar triangles,
the height of the bulb was determined to be 25.49 cm. The actual height
of the bulb was 255.5 cm.
 The magnification of the water lens was determined to be 2.3.
 The focal length of the water lens for red light was determined to be
4.18 cm and for blue light it was determined to be 4.28 cm.
