Exercise
Discuss the following:

Exercises are straightforward applications of the concepts of the chapter. The following systems can
be described by a block diagram showing the cause-effect relationship and the feedback (if
present). Identify the function of each block and the desired input variable, output variable, and
measured variable.

1. An autofocus camera will adjust the distance of the lens from the film by using a beam of infrared
or ultrasound to determine the distance to the subject. Sketch a block diagram of this open-loop
control system, and briefly explain its operation.
EXERCISE

2. A temperature control system operates by sensing the difference between the thermostat setting
and the actual temperature and then opening a fuel valve an amount proportional to this
difference. Draw a functional closed- loop block diagram, identifying the input and output
transducers, the controller, and the plant. Further, identify the input and output signals of all
subsystems previously described.

3. A control system used a human operator as part

of a closed loop system. Sketch the block
diagram of the valve control system as shown
below:

4. A chemical plant has a control system, it is

valuable to control the chemical composition of
the product. To do so, a measurement of the
composition can be obtained by using an
infrared steam analyzer. The valve on the additive steam may be controlled. Complete
the control feedback loop and sketch a block diagram describing the operation of the
control loop.

EXERCISE NO.1
Solve the Following Problems:

1. Find the transfer function of the following:

a. 𝐺(𝑠) =
( )( )
b. 𝐺(𝑠) =
( )( )( )

2. A laser printer uses a laser beam to print copy rapidly for a computer. The laser is
positioned by a control input r(t), so that we have:

The input r(t) represents the desired position of the laser beam.
(a) If r(t) is a unit step, find the output y(t).
(b) What is the final value of y(t).
