Giving Suggestion or Advice

Have you ever given suggestion to your friend? When our friend has a problem, sometimes
he/she asks for our suggestion. Even sometimes we also give suggestion to our friend even though
he/she doesn't ask for it. A suggestion is an idea about what someone should do or how someone
should behave. Suggestion should be given in appropriate way. A suggestion can be accepted or refused.
We should not be angry if our suggestion is not accepted. Advice is an opinion about what you should do
or how you should act in particular situation.

Study the following expressions carefully!

Asking for Suggestion/Advice :

a) Do you have any suggestion for me?

b) Will you give me some suggestion, please?

c) What should do?

d) Would you mind giving me your suggestion?

e) Can you tell me what should do?

Giving Suggestion/Advice

a) You'd better....

b) You could (might).

c) I suggest that you.

d) You really should.

e) I strongly advise you to.....

Accepting suggestion/advice

a. That’s a good/nice/wonderfull idea.

b. Why didn’t I think of that?

c. I think you’re right.

d. that sounds good.

e. Sure. I’ll do that.

 Declining Suggestion/Advice

a. I don't think so.

b. I don’t want to do that because …
c. That's a good idea, but
d. I'm afraid I can't do that.
e. I think it can't solve my problem.

Read the following dialogue! Can you show the expressions of asking for and giving suggestion
found in the dialogue? How do the speakers give suggestion?

Hasna : Oh my God, my stomach hurts.

Sari : What's wrong, Hasna? Are you okay?

Hasna : think I have stomachache.

Sari : You should go to the clinic.

Hasna : It's okay. I just need to eat. Please, take me that bag. I have some slices of toasts.

Sari :Here you are.

Hasna : I haven't had breakfast. Therefore, I have stomachache.

Sari : You should have breakfast regularly. It is not good for your health.

Hasna : You're right. I don't want to get stomachache again.

From the dialogue above, we know that Hasna gets stomachache because she hasn't had
breakfast. Therefore, Sari gives her suggestion to go to the clinic. She also suggests her have breakfast
regularly.
