“Navigating our global future”

by Ian Golding
1. How is globalization defined by the speaker?
According to Ian Goldin “The glory of globalization could also be its downfall.” There is truth in his
statement because as globalization becomes better and better every year it helps each country who
participates to thrive and boost their economy but there are also countries that do not participate or left
out by prosperous countries because they do not benefit from them and this could lead to a massive
downfall because if those countries decided to attack those countries that are leading in globalization in
any way possible this could trigger a domino effect because those countries under prosperous countries
relies on the information and innovation that they are getting from them and if something happens to
those countries they are greatly affected from it.
2. What are the pros and cons of globalization?
The pros of globalization are life expectancy has gone up by 25 years, income for most countries has gone
up, Illiteracy has gone down from half to a quarter people on earth, and our technology is getting better
every year. These are the great things about globalization is that countries help each other to grow and
sustain their own land because they both can benefit from it especially in the realm of technology where
the innovation in nanotech is getting better and its benefit to us greatly outweighs the risk. However, the
cons of globalization are the growing inequality not just among people but also among countries and the
complexity of it. Countries have been helping each other like forming alliances to better help each other
but the downside of it is that some countries are being left out because they do not like how that country
is being govern or there is no benefit for them when they help those countries and this could lead to if not
been talked about properly. Another thing is the complexity of it where each country depends heavily on
each other especially when it comes to trading goods because if a country is a major exporter of a product
and something happened to that country, the whole market of it will shift and we see it happen from the
financial crisis that happened and from the pandemic.
3. Do you have the understanding and sensitivity you need to interact in a global community which other
persons may look, act, and think differently than you do?
I think I have the sensitivity and understanding to interact with people that think differently that I do
because I do this most of the time with my friends where some of the m have different cultures and
upbringings and we tend to disagree on some things but that doesn’t mean we have to dislike each other
because we understand that we didn’t come from the same place that is why we have different
perspectives and we respect each other’s opinion and we really think the appropriate terms to
communicate with each other especially those topics that are very sensitive.
4. Are you ready to embrace diversity? How are you going to do it?
I am ready to embrace diversity and I am going to do it by understanding and respecting their cultures. It
is always fun to learn about different people and what are the different things they do that seems weird to
us and through communicating by sharing our different cultures we better understand why they do things
that we do not do. We learn to respect not just those diverse people that we meet on a daily basis but also
those strangers that we pass by and maybe talk to them just once in our life. Understanding that the moral
and cultural ethics in our country are not the standards in the whole world is the first step to better
understand and embrace diversity.
