5.1) Program Purpose

The program purpose “provides the framework that sets the direction of the program, while using

goals and objectives to provide a plan as to how the purpose will be achieved” ("Developing a

Program's Purpose, Goals and Objectives", 2010). The goals and objectives for the S.T.E.M

Guyana are as follows:

Goals

 Improve the academic performances of children in vulnerable communities.

 Engage children and youths in S.T.E.M training that is age appropriate so that they can be

more active in the growing S.T.E.M economy in Guyana.

Objectives

 Create an engaging, effective and scalable cost effective after-school educational delivery

model that will aid in the increased efficiency of the student's literacy, numeracy and

science skills.

 Involve the youths in engaging S.T.E.M. workshops and robotics camp that will provide

them with the hands-on experience they need to engage within the S.T.E.M community

both locally in Guyana and someday, internationally.

 Utilize the “Robin the Robot” television show as well as personalized Robot kits to

engage younger children in S.T.E.M training.

5.2) Needs Being Addressed

Every program is erected due to unmet needs within an area or within a target group. The unmet

needs of the community are prioritized by the program and the project design is built around

these needs to ensure that they are achieved in the most effective and optimal way. The needs

being addressed within the Angoy’s Avenue Community through the S.T.E.M Guyana Learning

Pods Program are as follows:

 Provide quality education to vulnerable children in low-income communities.

 Improve the literacy and numeracy skills of youths that have ‘aged out’ of the school

system.

 Provide access to electronic devices and stable internet connection where children can

access their virtual classes safely without distractions as well as complete homework and

assignments with the help of the center volunteers.

 Providing youths in the community with invaluable S.T.E.M training and knowledge.

5.3) Expected Effects

Expected effects are “changes or results that the organization expects to be achieved after the

successful completion of the project” (Ahmad, 2022). Every program sets out with expected

effects and the expected effects of the S.T.E.M Guyana goals are as follows:

 Provide youths in vulnerable communities with invaluable S.T.E.M training and

knowledge so they are viewed as marketable and indispensable individuals within the

ever-growing S.T.E.M economy in Guyana.

 Improve the academic performances of vulnerable children in low-income communities

by teaching them to properly read and problem solve.

5.4) Criteria for Success

??????????? I am not understanding this aspect of the assignment, some comments on this

heading would be appreciated Miss October.

5.5) Program Activities

 Develop an engaging, effective and scalable cost-effective educational delivery

model- This activity requires stakeholders to research and collect the current academic

teaching schemes from the Ministry of Education and research the best ways to relay this

information in a fun and engaging way that will resonate with the children. This activity

is an integral part of them entire S.T.E.M Guyana learning pods program since it is one

that constantly needs to be reviewed to ensure that the beneficiaries of the program are

receiving the most accurate and up to date information.

 Create and implement a training guide for all volunteers and potential staff- The

S.T.E.M Guyana program is such a successful one because of the many generous and

willing volunteers who render their services to better serve the children of these low-

income communities. However, each volunteer must be screened and go through a

rigorous training with the head of the learning pod to ensure this individual is brought up

to speed on what is expected of them since working with vulnerable children can be a bit

different since they need extra care and attention.

 Initiated a virtual classroom- The S.T.E.M Guyana program is one that prides itself on

being all inclusive, so when the physical classrooms were short of volunteers for each

grade level the program created a solution to this problem that had the children utilize the

electronic tablets and access a teacher through the Zoom platform where they would be

engaged and educated for the class until a teacher was found for the physical class. This

activity was beneficial to all parties associated with the program since it ensured that the

children would always have access to a volunteer that was willing to help and it gave the

program an innovative way to utilize all of the extra volunteers that signed up but could

not attend the physical classes due to it being filled at maximum capacity.

 Develop robotics and coding camp- In keeping with the technology aspect of the

S.T.E.M based program, the initiative implemented an annual robotics camp where the

youths are given quality knowledge of technology and hands on experience building and

programming robots from scratch. This is one of the program’s most exciting activities as

it engages children in a unique way and introduces them to a different aspect of

education. This camp is also exciting as it offers a gateway into the robotics competition

that is held outside Guyana annually and it gives the youths a chance to showcase their

knowledge and talent as well as provides them with a unique opportunity for networking.

5.6) Resources Used

Within a program setting, resources are defined as “the people, capital, and material or supplies

needed for successful management and completion of a project” (Harrin, 2019). The resources

used within the S.T.E.M Guyana program are as follows:

 Money

 Volunteers

 Electronic devices

 Stationary

 Workbooks

5.8) Program Context

Programs are developed within a set of circumstances that influences program outcomes and

process. The S.T.E.M Guyana program was developed around the contextual factors of 1)

Community diversity and culture, 2) Physical environment, 3) Demographic profile of the

community, 4) Community readiness.

 Community diversity and culture- Community diversity and culture speak to

addressing the individual needs of each participant within a potential program to

accommodate their needs and guide the efficient success of the program. For the S.T.E.M

Guyana program, this contextual factor looked like the staff assessing each child before

they began the program to identify areas that they need the most help in academically-

whether it was learning to read, problem solving, mathematical issues- and creating

strategies to combat these issues within the program.

 Physical environment- Physical environment speaks to “how welcoming a setting is,

whether it is in a location that is non-stigmatizing, or how easily it can be reached by

public transit” (McGuire, 2016). For the S.T.E.M Guyana program, this was within

context since the program is being facilitated within the low-income community of

Angoy’s Avenue and since the program is tailored to providing access to quality S.T.E.M

training and education to youths and children in low-income communities it is beneficial

that all the youths benefitting from this program already reside in this neighborhood,

close to the project.

 Demographic profile of the community- Demographic profile of the community

include “factors like the age and gender of potential participants contributes to decisions
Kayla Schultz 1032049 10

regarding size and focus of a program” (McGuire, 2016). This contextual factor was

given careful consideration during the program design phase and its end result made way

for an all-inclusive educational program for all genders and school age-appropriate

groups while facilitating trainings and hands on experiences to those that are a bit older

but are willing to learn new skills.

 Community readiness- In order for a program to be successful, it must first line up with

the needs of the community or it has no chance of success. The S.T.E.M Guyana program

was welcomed by the community since it was introduced during the height of the

COVID-19 Pandemic to offer access to educational resources to children who could not

otherwise afford to be academically stimulated. This program is still functioning as an

after-school program now since schools have reopened since it still lines up with the

community’s need of accessing quality educational resources for its residents.
