No 12 Harmonic analysis of cantilever beam

AIM:
Conduct a harmonic forced response test by applying a cyclic load (harmonic) at the end of the
beam. The frequency of the load will be varied from 1 - 100 Hz. Modulus of elasticity = 200GPa,
Poisson’s ratio = 0.3, Density = 7800 Kg/m3.

PROCEDURE
 Identity the nodes and corresponding coordinates of given cantilever beam.
 Click file – clear and start new – click don’t read file – ok and change the title for current work
plane
 In the preference section
 Go to Preference - Structural - Ok.
 In the preprocessor
 Preprocessor - Element type - Add/Edit/Delete – Add – beam – 3D finite strain (beam 188) – ok
 Material props - Material Models - Structural - Linear - Elastic - Isotropic – EX= 210×10 , PRXY=
3

0.30 - Ok.
 Sections – beams – common sections – assign breadth and height value as 12 mm ,12 mm
respectively – Ok
 Modeling - Create – key points - In Active CS - Apply, 0,0 – Apply, 100,0 – Apply, 200,0 - Apply,
300,0 - Ok. Also Number the key point as 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively. Then work plane shows the
denoted key points.
 Modeling – Create - Lines - Straight line - Connect all key points based on the beam problem
 Meshing - Mesh tools - Size Controls - Line Sets - select line - Size -NDIV=35 – Apply - Ok
 Meshing - Mesh tools - Line Mesh – Mesh - Select line to mesh - Ok.
 Plot controls – Numbering - Switch on the node and Element numbering
 Loads - Analysis type - New Analysis – Static – Ok
 Loads - Define Loads - Apply – Structural - Displacement - On Key points - Click node no 1 –
select All DOF - Ok,
 To apply uniformly distributed load. Go to loads - Define Loads - Apply – Structural – pressure – on
beams – select box – pick the portion between 2 and 3 nodes – click apply – alter load key value as 2
– pressure value at I is 1200 N/mm – Ok
 To apply uniformly varying load. Go to Solution - Define Loads - Apply – Structural – pressure – on
beams – select box – pick the portion between nodes 3 and 4 – click apply – alter load key value as 2
– pressure value at I is 1200 N/mm and node J is 2400 N/mm – Ok
 In the solution section
 Solution – Solve - Current LS – ok
 In the general post processor section
 General Postproc, go to time history, add dats.
 Dof must be given only for the y component
 For the first node, get the graph.
 Goto plotcntrl, then style – graph- modify axex-x axes- linear- y axis- logarithmic
 For the second node, go to time history, add dats.
 Dof must be given only for the y component
 Goto plotcntrl, then style – graph- modify axex-x axes- linear- y axis- logarithmic.
 Save as metafile with invert color.

RESULT
Thus the harmonic forced response test was conducted by applying a cyclic load for the given
cantilever beam, with frequency varying from 1-100 Hz.
