INTRODUCTION

LOCATION: Aligarh

CLIMATE TYPE: Warm And Temperate

PROJECT: Residence

AVERAGE TEMPERATURE: 24.7 °C | 76.5 °F

Aligarh lies in the Northern Hemisphere

ANNUAL AVERAGE PRECIPITATION: 816 mm | 32.1 inches

The month with the highest number of rainy days is July (21.53 days).

The month with the lowest number of rainy days is December (0.87

days).

HUMIDITY: Month with the highest relative humidity is August (79.34

%). The month with the lowest relative humidity is April (29.31 %).

Summer starts here at the end of June and ends in September.

HOURS OF SUNSHINE:

In May there is an average of 12.08 hours of sunshine a day and a

total of 374.48 hours of sunshine throughout May.

In January, the lowest number of daily hours of sunshine is measured

in Aligarh on average. In January there are an average of 8.93

hours of sunshine per day and a total of 276.91 hours of sunshine

The facade is towards North. Drawing room and bedroom are place near

entrance, after them there is a living area, which is sufficiently ventilated.

The kitchen is placed towards S-E, because it is already the most hot part in

a residence and in East we get morning light which is not much hot and it is

desireable for daylight. Bathroom and toilet are placed on West face,

beacuse it is the most heated face of a residence and a master bedroom is

placed on S-W direction, receiving sufficient daylight.

The house is sufficiently ventilated with windows on the south face with

both horizontal and vertical shading, ideal for receiving morning light

and sufficient daylight. On West face, only ventilators are placed high in

the wall for the sole purpuse of air circulation and ventilation. On the

east face large windows are placed for easy and efficient air

circulation.

The first floor is also sufficiently cross-ventilaled for efficient usage by the

residents as shown in the plan.

DETAILED SOLAR STUDY

The solar study is done in detail covering shading devices, daylighting,

morning and evening response, solar animations of morning to evening

of floor plans, elevatins and 3d views.

The solar study is done of our residence on 21 June, 21 March and 1

January in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India.

The date and time of the solar study is mentioned in the image.

Software Used: Autodesk Revit Architecture

CLIMATIC CONSIDERATIONS

1. FORM AND ORIENTATION:

As we know that the orientation is one of the most important part of a

project. In my design, as it is clear from the solar study, the building is

oriented N-S ( long axis ) so as to maximise amount of solar radiation

in winter and minimize the amount in summers and also keeping in

mind the wind direction ( i e. W-E predominantly). Also, as we know

that the building form determines the volume of space inside a

building that needs to be heated or cooled. Thus, more compact the

shape, the less wasteful it is in gaining/losing heat. There, a compact

form is derived depending upon site restrictions and local climatic

conditions.

2. SHADING:

As we know that, shading for south openings in the south must allow

penetration of the low angle sun for heat gain during winter but must

block the same during summer. For opening in north, shading is needed

only to prevent penetration of the high sun angle during summers. Also,

solar radiation on east and west facing openings does not vary much

by the seasonal variations in the sun path. They receive uniform solar

radiation, while compared to north and south facing openings, which

receive higher solar radiation through the year. Therefore, horizontal

shading are used on E-W faces and vertical as well as horizontal

shading devices are used on N-S faces to allow sufficient daylight

while blocking irritating sunlight.

3. DAYLIGHTING:

As we know that, more the sunlight that enters the building, more the

heat that needs to be dealt with. Therefore, the windows are arranged

in such a manner so that the house is well-lit most of the time without

being much heated, as it is evident from the solasr study

4. THERMAL COMFORT:

As we know that, human body needs to maintain its core temperature at

37 ºC. In order to do so, it must constantly exchange heat with the

surroundings. People feel comfortable when this process is sufficiently

supported by the surrounding thermal environment of a building. Human

body is in a near continuous exchange of heat with the surroundings.

Heat is produced inside the body due to biochemical processes like

metabolism. It is also produced or lost due to conduction, radiation and

convection when the body touches, or is in the vicinity of a heat source.

Deep body temperature must remain constant at 37 °C and to maintain

this equilibrium the body must lose or gain heat to or from its

surroundings. Therefore, the house is designed keeping human thermal in

mind. Humidity, wind speed, air temperature are the factors that are

noticed and worked upon in this design to provide good thermal comfort

to the residents.

5. CHOICE OF MATERIALS AND THERMAL MASS:

As fire burnt bricks, being a cheaper and durable choice locally, is

selected but bricks have high thermal mass therefore they store heat, as

west being the face where most of the heat is stored, therefore shdaed

by trees. Also, white paint is used to reflect most of the sunlight that falls

on the walls. Concrete slabs also stores heat therefore, solar reflective

tiles are used on the roof. Wooden doors and fibre glass windows are

used with perforated shading so they won't absorb much of the heat.

Insulation is provided of rock wool in the walls.

6. VENTILATION:

As we know that, fresh air in a building brings health benefits and

increased comfort level to its occupants. Therefore, opposite pressure

zone ( since natural ventilation rely on pressure to move fresh air through

buildings) therefore, ventilators are placed at high cill height on one face

and windows are placed at low cill height on the opposite face so as to

devely pressure difference for easy air circulation
