CHAPTER I
The Problem and its Background

INTRODUCTION

The COVID-19 virus struck like lightning. It was

unexpected and it forced all people to retreat into their
safest zones despite of it being uncomfortable. At first,
panic engulfed everyone being taken by surprise. It was
already expected since other Asian countries have been
infected first but nevertheless, when it came unannounced,
people were taken aback

The pandemic had its toll among the various sectors of

the community. The business and economic sector suffered. Many
lost their jobs. As a consequence, many suffered emotionally
and mentally too. The education sector was never an exception.
Teachers, and students most especially also had their fair
share of anxieties, uncertainties, fears and doubts. More than
the dread of catching the virus was the apprehension on what
would happen in education.

Luckily, the Department of Education implemented various

learning modalities that would suit the environment,
lifestyle, capabilities, skills and interests of learners. The
distance learning modality facilitated education in more ways
than one. There was the online learning, printed modular
learning, digital modular learning, TV based, radio based and
blended learning. The learner can also shift from one modality
to another considering what’s more accessible and comfortable
to the learner. The department has also been trying to provide
all learning materials needed to facilitate learning like
modules, gadgets and eve cellphone loads.

However, no matter how hard the department and parents

try, the learners are not fully free from distress
particularly when faced with a lot of school tasks with very
limited help from teachers or from the absence of learning
facilitators. Despite the implementation of academic ease and
mental health break, learners need to survive. This they can
do if they have personal coping mechanisms that would help
them overcome the restrictions and pressures of the COVID-19
pandemic.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to find out what coping mechanisms are

employed by the learners to survive the educational challenges
brought about by the pandemic. Specifically, it tries to seek
answers to the following questions:

1. How did the pandemic affect their studies?

2. What difficulties did they encounter regarding their
learning?
3. How did they overcome these difficulties? What coping
mechanisms did they employ?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be helpful to:

1. The students. They will be able to adapt coping

mechanisms from other students which will enable them
to succeed in their studies despite the pandemic.
2. The parents. Shall be able to understand and assist
their children more appropriately.
3. The teachers. They shall be able to adapt better to the
learning styles of the learners considering their
coping mechanisms.
