CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

"Education is the most wonderful weapon which you can use to change the

world”

-Nelson Mandela

Education is a power that no one can ever deny. Education has the power

to change our entire life. In order for us to succeed we need education. In our

society it is made up of different kinds of people and the mindset of each

difference. If you are educated, one can guide you to the right path in a better

manner, he/she can come up with a variety of ideas and concepts which may be

related to political participation, social equality, or environmental sustainability. It

is closed like that power of knowledge that we call “Education” can help us bring

the change that we always wanted to the world we belong to.

Liceo de Calauan is a private school in Calauan. Covid-19 shutdown the dreams

and ambitions of the student who wants to study. New normal was so difficult.

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) has severely affected

national and global economies. Various classes are facing different issues with a

certain degree of losses. Particularly, schools are facing a variety of problems

such as decrease in students, supply of the books, cancelation of programs and

events, and transportation disruptions, among others. Nevertheless, it is quite

clear that schools around the globe are experiencing the significant major victims

of Covid-19 outbreak.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Covid-19 pandemic outbreaks have led many countries to improve

travel restrictions and movement. In the city of Calauan, Covid-19 pandemic has

presented many challenges to students, educators and parents, children already

coping with mental health conditions have been especially vulnerable to the

changes.

Covid-19 pandemic also affects the mental health of the student.

Nearly three in 10 (29%) say their child is “already experiencing harm” to their

emotional or mental health because of social distancing and closure. Another

14% indicate their children are approaching their limits, saying they could

continue social distancing a few more weeks until their mental health suffers.

The crisis has forced school closure in almost 200 countries,

disrupting the learning process of more than 1.7 billion children, according to the

Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Most

governments including the Philippines were forced to adopt distance- learning

solutions to ensure education continuity. This hysteresis effect in education

requires specific attention, it said, citing the need to bring disengaged students

back to school and mitigate student disengagement in case of future lockdown.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The study is supported by the theory of Consistency by Festinger (1957) and

Heider (1958). When our inner systems (beliefs, attitudes, values, etc.) all

support one another and when these are also supported by external evidence,

then we have a comfortable state of affairs. The discomfort of cognitive

dissonance occurs when things fall out of alignment, which leads us to try to

achieve a maximum practical level of consistency in our world. We also have a

very strong need to believe we are being consistent with social norms. When

there is conflict between behaviors that are consistent with inner systems and

behaviors that are consistent with social norms, the potential threat of social

exclusion often sways us towards the latter, even though it may cause significant

inner dissonance.

The consistency is related to the student in their academic track. Those

honor students before the pandemic are consistent in their study, because of the

pandemic their studies also affected the adoption of the distance learning

method.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The research will determine the effect of the pandemic in the behavior of

the students of junior highschool in Liceo de Calauan.

The aim is to determine the effects of pandemic in the behavior of the students in

junior high school.

Specifically, this research aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is related to lockdown?

1.1. Restriction and Regulation

2. What is the underbelly of Behavior?

2.1 Consistency

2.2 Individual Differences

2.3 Stability

3. Are there any significant effects of the pandemic lockdowns in the Classes of

Liceo de Calauan?

HYPOTHESIS
There are no significant effects of the pandemic in the Behavior of

selected junior high school students of Liceo de Calauan.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

-The scope of this study will pinpoint the massive effects of the

CoronaVirus, such as pandemic, lockdown, lack of resources, and the behavior

among other things (Covid-19). This research will have a significant impact on

the following topics:

Student

Being a student during the pandemic makes it difficult to study and focus.

Especially for students who do not have such resources, internet access,

savings, or school supplies to help them with their studies.

Teacher

Teaching in this pandemic is extremely challenging and complicated. The

difficulties that the majority of teachers face are internet access, supplies, a lack

of knowledge about the students, some students who do not participate, and so

on.

Principal

Principal's job is to handle all of the school's paperwork, as well as to

manage the students' expenses and supplies. During the pandemic, their work
became more difficult. Many situations occur, such as teachers quitting and

students not attending classes because of the lockdowns.

School Staffs

As a result of the pandemic, they lose their jobs because they no longer have

work in the school, which is their sole source of income. Unlike teachers and

principals, who can work at home.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study will focus on the effects of pandemic lockdown during the

Covid-19 pandemic in terms of their duration and restrictions or regulations with

respect to the student of Liceo de Calauan. In terms of the types of online

classes, time of online classes, student capacity, and teachers and principal

within the vicinity of the research around Calauan, Laguna

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following terms employed in the study were defined operationally for

easier and clearer presentation.

Business. Facing intense outbreak causes like bankruptcy felt around the world.
Covid-19. Is a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus “co” stands for

corona, “vi” for virus, and “d” for deceased formerly, this disease was referred to

as 2019 novel coronavirus or 2019nCOV.

Crisis. Is as difficult or dangerous time in which a solution is needed. It’s a

critical moment or worse moment.

Education. The process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially

at a school or university

Jobs. It has created negative impacts on the livelihoods especially business and

infrastructure are closed.

Mental Health. Is a considerable amount of mental fear in people such as in old

humans and having a bad health condition.

School. An institution for educating children.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDY

LOCKDOWN
As explained by Joffe (2021) in response, most countries implemented

lockdowns, restricting their citizens' movements, work, education, gatherings,

and general activities in an attempt to 'flatten the curve' of COVID-19 cases. The

public health goal of lockdowns was to protect the population from COVID-19

cases and deaths, as well as to keep health-care systems from becoming

overburdened with COVID-19 patients.

The lockdown affects millions of students because of distance learning. It

causes a loss of appetite in studying because of a lack of gadgets, lack of

motivation, lack of knowledge in the lesson, mostly for modular students, and a

lack of access to the internet.

As explained by UNICEF (2021 that UNICEF statement on keeping minors in

lockdown MANILA, 19 March 2021-- UNICEF acknowledges the efforts put in

place by the Government of the Philippines to control the recent surge in COVID-

19 infections. However, the recent decision of the Metro Manila Council, through

the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, to explicitly prohibit minors from

going outside for a period of two weeks, in a bid to contain the transmission of

the virus in the metropolis, can be considered an infringement of children’s rights.

While efforts to contain the spread of infections require public health and social

measures, UNICEF emphasizes that these measures should consider the

highest level of acceptability and feasibility, proven effectiveness and should

minimize the negative consequences on health and well-being of all members of

society. They should respond to the best interest of the child; should not cause

further harm; and should always consider the preservation of the child’s well

being and dignity.

RELATED STUDY

CONSISTENCY

As mentioned by Gray and Jourdan (2022) There were 192 helpful responses

from 43 countries and territories, as well as one multi-country region. Twenty of

these, mostly in the Global North, had received reopening guidance, 23 were still

awaiting it, and one had not closed its schools. Guidance prioritized public health

measures such as social distancing, with less emphasis on the effects of

education. Partnerships between schools, families, and local governments,

consistent guidance, and adequate time and resources for implementation all

contributed to success. Students and faculty were absent in large numbers due

to fear of infection.

Education is one of the most affected due to COVID-19

INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES

Tang and Braver (2020) stated that a growing body of research indicates that

mindfulness training can have beneficial effects on critical aspects of

psychological well-being, cognitive function, and brain health. Although these

benefits have been generalized to the population level, individual variability in

observed effects of mindfulness training has not been systematically investigated

STABILITY

As specified by Gillet, Morin, and Reeve (2017) these academic motivation

profiles remained stable over the course of two months. The impact of these

profiles on student engagement, disengagement, and achievement, as well as

the role of self-oriented perfectionism in predicting profile membership, are also

examined.
CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter is a detailed discussion of the methods and procedures used

in the study on the Impact of the Pandemic in students of Liceo de Calauan. The

discussion covers the research design, respondents of the study, research

procedure, research instrument and statistical treatment applied in processing

and analyzing the data.

Research Design

The study used descriptive design. This involves the description, recording

and analyzing of the relevant data gathered from the respondents of the study.

The description method of this research used a questionnaire as the main tool in

gathering data. It is more essentially simple because it gives meaning to the

quality and standing of facts that are going on.

Descriptive survey is the general procedure employed in studies that have

the main purpose of describing the phenomena in contrast to ascertain what

caused them and what their significance are. Likewise, a descriptive survey is

directed toward finding the prevailing condition that is facts that prevail in a group

of cases chosen for the study.

Descriptive research includes all studies that present facts concerning the

Impact of the Pandemic in students of Liceo de Calauan. The foregoing research

design is deemed feasible to employ in the study, since the primary objective of
the inquiry is to describe and determine the effect among the various variables of

the study. The researchers determined the study on the Impact of the Pandemic

in the Behavior of selected junior highschool students of Liceo de Calauan.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study were composed of twenty-five (25) students

from Grade 7 - Our Lady of Lourdes, twenty-five (25) students from Grade 8 - St.

Peter, twenty-five (25) students from Grade 9 - St. Anne, and twenty-five (25)

students from Grade 10 – St. Isidore,

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusion, and

recommendation derived from “Babangon tayo” A study on the Impact of the

Pandemic in the Behavior of Selected Junior High School students of Liceo de

Calauan School Year 2021-2022. The researchers have given out a survey

questionnaire to students which aimed to determine the Impact of Pandemic in

the behavior of the selected Junior High School of Liceo de Calauan School Year

2021-2022.

Summary of Findings

The Findings of the study were summarized according to the statement of the

problem stated in Chapter 1.

Specifically, this research aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is related to lockdown?

a. Restriction and Limitation

The restriction and limitation, because if they followed the protocols during lockdowns.

2. What is the underbelly of Behavior?

2.1 Consistency

During lockdowns if the students of Liceo de Calauan follow the protocols

in our barangay’s.

2.2 Individual Differences

If they know his/her limitations and differences among others.

2.3 Stability

If they are all stable during lockdowns.

3. Are there any significant effects of the pandemic lockdowns in the

Classes of Liceo de Calauan?

Yes, there are many significant effects of the pandemic lookdowns in the classes

or even students of Junior High School in Liceo de Calauan.

Conclusion

After thorough research, the data shows that we, the researcher, reject the

null hypothesis because there are some significant effects of pandemic

lockdowns to the selected Junior High School in Liceo de Calauan School Year

2021-2022. Nonetheless, part of the findings shows that data in terms of

Consistency, Individual Differences, and Stability proved to be not significant.

Recommendation

Based on the foregoing result and references of the study yielded the

following recommendation needed for further development of the study.

For students. Now that you know the possible effects of a pandemic you

just need to focus and continue on what you're doing even if a pandemic

changes your life. Especially your education.

For Teachers, Principals, and School Staff. The researcher hopes that

this research helps them to understand how pandemic changes the social

life of students.
