LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 8 SCIENCE

I. OBJECTIVES:
A. Content Standards: The learners should be able to demonstrate an understanding work using constant force, power, gravitational potential energy,
kinetic energy, and elastic potential energy.
B. Performance Standards: The learners should be able to develop a written plan and implement a “Newton’s Olympics”.
C. Learning Competencies/Objectives: At the end of the session, learners are expected to:
 Describe how work is related to power and energy (S8FE-Ic-20).

ELICIT Good morning class. Good morning Sir.
Are you all set for today’s class? Yes, Sir.

Yes, Sir. Classmates let us bow our head and

Class President, please lead the prayer pray.
In the name of the Father…

Thank you (Class President).

(A student answers)
Yesterday, we talked about Newton’s 3rd When an object exerts a force on another
law of Motion which is the law of object, the second object exerts on the first a
interaction. What does it state? force of the same magnitude but in opposite
direction.
That is correct! Or simply, for every (A student answers)
force (action) there is an equal and For example, when you jump, your legs apply
opposite force (reaction). Who can give a force to the ground, and the ground applies

Very good! Walking is possible because
of the 3rd law of motion. It seems like you
already mastered our previous
discussion.

ENGAGE Specific Objectives of the lesson;
1. Define work.
2. Identify whether work is done or
not.
3. Determine the relationship
between energy and work.
(Students answer may vary)
When you hear the word “work” what
comes first in your mind?
Work have different meanings to
different people. But in physics, work has
a very specific meaning. Refer to the
illustrations presented.

Very good! That is one way to define

work.

EXPLAIN Work is done when the force (F) applied
to the object causes the object to have a
displacement (d) in the same direction as
the force applied. The symbol for work is
a capital W. The work done by a force
can be calculated as

W = Fd
(A student answers)
Newton
What is the unit of force?
(A student answers)
How about displacement? Meter

(A student answers)
Based from the formula and the units of Newton meter or Joule
force and displacement, who can give the
unit for work?

Very good. The unit Joule is named after

the Physicist James Prescott Joule. This part targets indicator

Grade 7 Science regarding heat transfer? Yes This part targets indicator
#1
Within the curriculum
Suppose you are drinking your morning (A student answers) S7LT-IIIh-i-12
coffee, what happens when you put a The metal spoon becomes hot? Infer the conditions
metal spoon on the coffee cup? necessary for heat
transfer to occur
Why do you think so? (A student answers)
Because heat is transferred from the hot coffee
cup to the metal spoon.

Take note that heat is also a form of

energy, in other words, energy is
transferred from the coffee cup to the
metal spoon.

Work is also a means of transferring

energy from one object to another. Refer (A student answers)
to the illustration. Yes, when the force exerted on the ball is in
the same direction as the motion of the ball.

(Students are expected to play a bowling game

as depicted in the illustration)
Is there a work done on the ball?

Try to imitate the illustration at your

home (use plastic bottle and a small ball),
give a nudge on the ball and see what
happens.

If you notice, after pushing the ball it

continuously move until it hits the plastic
bottle. Something was transferred from
your hands to the ball causing it to move
continuously. That something is called
“energy”.

Since work is done on the ball, it gains

energy while the person that does work
on it loses energy. How about in the case
of ball and the plastic bottle?

What relationship can you infer between

work and energy based on the illustration
that has been discussed?
(A student answers)
The rolling ball that does work on the empty
plastic bottle loses energy while the bottle
gains energy.

(A student answers)
When work is done, energy is transferred.
