Fixation bolts rocker arm bracket

Engine type S/BVM628.

Subject Modification of fixation rocker arm bracket.

Background At some HFO-engines, the fixation bolts for the rocker arm brackets torn off
(as a result of vibrations). Therefore, these bolts have been modified. For
standardisation reasons, this modification has been introduced for all new
engines built since April 1985.

Recommendation Modify all cylinder heads that are overhauled by Wärtsilä as well as the ones
that had problems with these bolts, as described in this document. Other
cylinder heads to be modified on request of the owner.

Instruction Required action:

A. Enlarge the threaded holes in the cylinder head
B. Exchange old type of fixation bolts for new type
C. Modify old type of rocker arm bracket to new type
D. Check rocker arm shaft (inlet) and modify if necessary

A. Enlarge the threaded holes in the cylinder head

Enlarge two of the four threaded holes for fixation of the rocker arm brackets
from M12x1.5 to M14x1.5, as indicated in the picture below

Remarks:
The required
roughness for the hole
with diameter Ø16 mm
is Rz100. This can be
reached by normal
drilling.

Remark:
The required roughness for the hole with diameter Ø 16 mm is Rz100. This
can be reached by normal drilling.

C. Modify old type of rocker arm bracket to new type

Enlarge hole A and B according to the picture and instructions below

Old New
A Ø 12,2 ± 0.1 mm Ø 14,5 ± 0.1 mm
B Ø 14 mm Ø 16 mm

110+5

Remark:
The required roughness for both holes is Rz100.
The positional tolerance for hole A is Ø 0.2 mm.

D. Check rocker arm shaft (inlet) and modify if necessary

If the new bolts can not pass the grooves in the rocker arm shaft, this implies
that an old type of rocker arm is installed and has to be modified according to
the picture below
