WNL
engines Fuel oil specifications
General Please be advised that a new revision of the international standard
ISO 8217:2005, Petroleum products – Fuels (class F) – Specifications of
marine fuels has been published and should be followed when ordering and
using fuels.

Instructions The main changes for ISO RM and DM grade fuels are listed below.
ISO RM grades:
• Residual viscosity grades are now based on measured viscosity at 50 °C.
• The number of grades has been reduced from 15 to 10.
• The maximum allowed water content as bunkered has been reduced
from 1.0% V/V to 0.5% V/V.
• The maximum allowed sulphur (S) content has been reduced from 5.0%
m/m to 4.5% m/m, which is also in line with Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78:
Regulation 14.
• The elemental specifications now includes three new elements, zinc (Zn),
calcium (Ca) and phosphorous (P) typically originating from Used Lube
Oil (ULO) contamination of a fuel. All three elements shall exceed the
specified limits before a fuel oil shall be deemed to contain ULO´s.
• The maximum densities for RM grades 30 and 80 have been reduced to
respectively 975 kg/m3 and 980 kg/m3.

ISO DM grades:
• Sediments for the ISO DMB grade will now be tested according to the
Total Sediment Existent (TSE) procedure, which ensures that organic
(oily sludge) as well as inorganic sediments are determined.
• The ISO DMC grade fuel has the same ULO specification as ISO RM
grades.

Recommendation All fuel buyers should clearly indicate the specification against which they are
purchasing their fuel and also follow up carefully that the delivered fuel fulfils
all specified properties.
®
All fuels used in WÄRTSILÄ liquid fuel (HFO/LFO) operated installations
should be according to the new standard, which is ISO 8217:2005,
Petroleum products – Fuels (class F) – Specifications of marine fuels.
We also urge all engine operators to obtain a copy of the new ISO standard,
which is available through ISO (www.ISO.org) or their respective National
Standards Institute.
