Recommended Practice for Semi-Automatic Arc Welding JIS Z 3605-7 e Translated and Published by Japanese Standards Association @ Printed in Japan 10s ‘Translation without guarantee In the event of any doubt arising, the original standard in Japanese is to be evidence UDC 621.791.75:693.8/.9 JAPANESE INDUSTRIAL STANDARD srs Recommended Practice for Semi-~ 2 3605-1977 Automatic Arc Welding (Reaffirmed: 1980) 1. Scope This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies the basis for the opera~ tion of welding various structural steels by semiautomatic arc welding method, hereinafter referred to as "semiautomatic welding method". Remark: In the above, the semiautomatic arc welding method includes the carbon dioxide shielded arc welding method and the non- gas shielded arc welding method. 2, Definitions of Terms For the purpose of this standard, the following definitions as well as those in JIS Z 3001 apply. (1) power supply equipment A power distribution equipment for supply- ing power to the welding power source. (2) welding power source A power source for supplying the output of suitable characteristics for welding. (3) welding machine A machine including a welding power source, wire feeding apparatus, controls, welding torch, etc. (4) welding torch An appliance, equipped with a holder, for supplying welding wire, shield gas (for carbon dioxide shielded arc welding only) and electric current to the part to be welded. (3) contact tip A current conductive body attached to the tip of welding torch for guiding the wire and supplying it with electric current. (6) nozzle In carbon dioxide shielded arc welding, a body Fitted to the welding torch tip for rectifying the stream of shield gas and leading the gas to the part to be welded. 3. Symbols The marking of types of welding shall comply with JIS Z 3021. Applicable Standards: See page 15. 2 2% 3605-1977 4. Steels Steels shall be of JIS G 3101, Classes 1 and 2; JIS G 3106, Classes 1 to 4; JIS G 3113; JIS G 3114, Classes 1 and 2; JIS G 3131; JIS G 3444, Classes 1, 2 and 4; JIS G 3350; JIS G 3141; JIS G 3466 and those equivalent thereto, being free from defects such as detrimental flaws, rust, segrega~ tion, etc. which may affect welding. 5. Welding Materials 5.1 Welding Wires (1) Wires for carbon dioxide shielded are welding For the welding wires used in carbon dioxide shielded arc welding, solid wires shall conform to JIS Z 3312. For the flux cored wires, those which will produce deposited metals having mechanical properties equivalent to JIS Z 3312 shall be used. (2) Wires for non-gas shielded arc welding The flux cored wires used in non-gas shielded arc welding shall be those appropriate for the kind and dimensions of the steel used and the welding condi- tions. 5.2 As the shield gas, the carbon dioxide of Class 3 specified in JIS K 1106, or welding use carbon dioxide containing not more than 0.005 % moisture by mass shall, as a rule, be used. 6. Operators Operators shall have passed the examination in accordance with JIS Z 3841, 7. Welding Machine and Accessories 7.1 The welding power source shall have a necessary current capacity and electric characteristics suitable for welding, and be capable of smoothly regulating the welding current or arc voltage. 7.2 The wire feeding control shall have a controlling function adapted to the output characteristics of welding power source and be capable of smoothly regulating the welding current or arc voltage. 7.3. The welding torch shall have a necessary current capacity, durabili- ty, good working property, and shall be capable of stably feeding the wire. In addition, the outside of welding torch shall be well insulated. 7.4 The wire feeding equipment and the like shall have necessary function and operate properly. 7.5 The pressure regulator and flow regulator used when shield gas is used shall be capable of supplying the required flow and have been designed in full consideration of safety. ( ¢ 3 2 3605-1977 7.6 The cable shall conform to JIS C 3307, JIS C 3404 and JIS C 3302. 8. Preparation for Welding 8.1 The welding power source shall have a capacity appropriate for service. 8.2 The polarity in using DC power source shall be selected depending upon the property of welding wire used. 8.3 Earth connection shall be perfect, and when using DC, care shal be taken to prevent magnetic are blow. 8.4 Wires shall be kept in custody in a place where no risk of moisten- ing, fouling, etc. is present. 8.5 The groove shape shall be selected, as a rule, from Table 1, depending upon the shape of joint, plate thickness, welding method, welding position, restrictions from workshop, ete. 4 2 3605-1977 Table 1. When the tabs cannot be used, special care shall be taken in carrying out welding, as faults are likely to occur at the head, end and joint of bead. 10.7 Suitable preheating shall be applied to the steel material as necessary depending upon its kind and dimensions and atmospheric tempera~ ture. 10.8 Welding shali not be undertaken when the part to be welded is being exposed to rain or snow or wet with water. 10.9 In conducting carbon dioxide shielded arc welding, care shall be taken for the protection against wind. 10.10 Welding operation shall be carried out with enough precaution against distortion and contraction due to welding. 10.11 The reinforcement of weld which will not be finished is desirable to be as little and smooth as possible. 10.12 The size of reinforcing fillet of T joint or the like, shall be not less than 1/4 the thickness of vertical plate, provided that it need not exceed 10 mm. 11. In particular, where the weld faults are cracks, their causes shall be investigated and suitable measures shall be taken. 12.
