For denc-ninations nd explanations regarding defects in metallic fusion welded joints, see DIN B524 Part 1.
1 Scope
“This Ste-dard applies 10 quality requirements for fusion:
welded joints in steel, ft tipulates evaluation groups for
butt-welds and filewelds, The evaluation groups can
‘ako be used, 23 appropriate, for other types of welds.
‘Their use and the measures necessary for complying
with them can, e.g., be stipulated in statutory regula:
tions, generally recognized technical rules, or on the
basis of delivery agreements.

3. Requirements regarding welded joints
3.1 Stipulation of requirements
The requirements regarding welded joints should be
stipulzted in the documents that are binding for the
production (e.g. design or work documents}. For each
articular welded joint, the only requirements specified
Should be those that are necessary because of the required
or because of their effect on the struc
local proper
ure.
2.2. Description af requirements
The requirements must be defined and it nfust be possible
to prove that they have been met, The profof cen be

tr on 128 pieces manufactured under comparable con-
ditions. The following must be observed:

of application an the basis of similar requirements. On
the other hend, she same cequirsmemts apply to the ame
parts produced in different workshops s0 thet the work
is caried out using the same criteria,
Since the evaluation of the weld is the primary objective,
ro account is taken of the welding position; on the con
Wary, the welding pasition may in fact be determined by
the evaluation of the weld, In the case of butt-weids,
coly welds with fully weldedahrough cross-sections are
considered. Inthe cate af cross-sections not fully welded:
through, special agreements may be reached between the
manufacturer and the cumemer or the quality assurance
surveillance body.
Another essumption of the discussions was that in the.
cose of buTt-welds only cross-sections of the samne thick:
ness would be welded, Where cross-sections of different
thickness ate being welded, particular attention should be
id 10 misalignment; stipulations will be given
‘out this in another part af the Standard still 10
be prepared and the same applies to other materials.
Some of the evalustion criteria are stipulated in the form
of numerical values. In the case of the other information,
the DVS evaluation catalogue DIN B563, volume 74 of
the handbook series Welding Practice hat been jointly
prepated with the Deutscher Verband fir Schweisstechnik
8s 8 guideline for the various eveluation criteria. This
catalogue cen be obisined from the Deutscher Verlag far
Schweisstechnik GmbH, Disseldorf.
4 evaluation groups are stipulated for butt-welds (AS to
DS) and 3 for fillet-welds (AK 10 CK], AS and AK respec-
tively being the highest evalustion groups.
{is possible for special cases to combine the individual
evaluation criteria; this fact should be stated separately
in the design and production documents,
In the case of pipe joints, a combination of different
evaluation criteria is virtually always necessary since the
various tolerances have to be taken into account, i
In the case of internal defects mentioned in this Standard, i
attention has to be paid to the liability of the material to i
‘rack end to the vay cracks develop. Only those cracks
that can be recognized without excessive eFlant using ;
non-destructive test methods should be taken into i
arcount, So-called micro-cracks are not included in this
Standard. They are dependent on the material and hence
do not provide any evaluction criterion for the weld,
is not the object of this Standard to specify the extent
of testing and the design of the tests; these should be
artied out on the basis of the current tules of on the
basis of agreements berween the manufacturers and
operator’. Compliance with the requirements of the cate
logue of criteria for the evaluation group should be
checked according 10 the evaluation gioup chosen, the
extsinal condition being checked as far as possible by
visual inspection. The extent of test for the internal con.
dition should be decided as a function of the evaluation
group.
