ABSTRACT
The present study aimed at evaluating the anti-bacterial potential of aqueous and
methanolic extracts of Solanum nigrum, The susceptibility of microbial strains to
the two extracts was determined using agar well diffusion method. The bacterial
strains employed were Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. A dose
dependent increase in the antibacterial activity was observed with both the
methanol and aqueous extracts. Highest antibacterial activity was exhibited by
aqueous extract with Escherichia coli followed by Staphylococcus aureus
Methanolic extract showed highest antibacterial activity the aqueous extract
exhibits the highest antibacterial potential. The study concludes that the plant
possess novel compounds with significant antibacterial properties. Isolation and
characterization of these novel compounds could provide potent anti-bacterial
agents to combat pathogenic infections. Solanum nigrum extract using agar well
method and disc diffusion method was observed to show some degree of inhibition
which varied with the organisms tested and between solvents with the aqueous
extracts demonstrating the highest activity against all the test bacteria. Solanum
nigrum (Ewa) play an important role in traditional medicines which is a widely
used in oriental medicine where it is considered to be an anti- tumorigenic, anti
oxidant , anti- convulsant anti- inflammatory , hepatoprotective, diuretic and anti
pyretic agent the juice of the plant used on ulcer and other skin diseases in Nigeria.
