This is all you need to
know about
building teams!

In the journey of business, ups and

downs are natural. The right team will
make sure you overcome the hurdles
and speed towards your business
goals. The wrong team is not just
detrimental to growth, it may also
result in your business completely
falling apart.

But what is the recipe to build a high

performance team? What are the
things you should be looking at when
you think of hiring team members?

1
Clarity of Roles

This is the first step. This needs to happen even before you
hire a team. Often when we talk about roles of team
members, it is restricted to the title of the role. But what are
the specific tasks that come within that role? What is the
outcome you expect from that role? All these things need to
be clear in your head first. Only then will you be able to hire
someone who can fit that role. If you don’t have a clarity of
exactly what roles your team members have then there’s no
accountability and solid confusion about who has to do what
and what outcomes can the team expect from whom! The
first C- CLARITY!

Connection between
team members

No one wants a team of robots! Team members who are

efficient but alienated. You need to build connections
between team members, you need to know their stories,
their journeys, what drives them, what scares them, their
aspirations and goals. There needs to be a strong sense of
shared purpose within the team which can only be forged if
team members are open, communicative and understand
each other’s journeys. A solid team is formed with bonding
and not just by sticking to work and going home. The 2nd C
thus is- CONNECTION!

Co-creation of Goals

Remember when business owners dumped goals on team

members? Gave them targets? That time is gone. You as a
business owner need to discuss the shared vision, the
mission and the business goals of your company with your
team members. If they are not aware of this, what is the
purpose for them to be driven when they come to work every
day? You need to co-create the goals along with them so
they know that they actually are an integral part of the team
and not just in speeches you give during felicitation
ceremonies!

Competence
Development

Performance grows only when skills and knowledge grow

and skills and knowledge cannot grow by themselves. If you
need your team members to be high performers, you need to
identify what skills and knowledge they need to add in order
to be more productive. They need to be mentored and given
direction. You need to focus on enhancing your team
members’ competencies so that they work at their full
potential!

5
Consistent Reviews

This is the most critical C of this whole process. You have

given them the opportunity, the direction, the mentoring.
You also need to constantly review if they are on track with
their goals, you need to see what they need to do differently
to achieve those goals within the co-created timeline.
Reviews are not negative. They are absolutely essential to
gauge how a team member is performing and how they can
perform even better. You need to take charge and make sure
you schedule reviews with each team member consistently!

Culture

This is the C that would matter the most to your team. No

one accepts a work opportunity just for the compensation
anymore. They accept a workplace when they see there is
growth and respect. As a business owner you need to make
sure the workplace is neither dictatorial nor extremely lax!
There needs to be a fine balance between responsibility and
fun. You need to build a balanced culture. Results need to be
prioritised through accountability and connection between
team members needs to be prioritised equally through
genuine care, bonding and respect. A culture of results and
relationships which is a WIN-WIN for both the team and the
company.

7
Celebrate

You need to celebrate! You need to reward people and

recognise them so that talent in your company is always
motivated to work to their optimum potential. When you
recognise contributions, it matters to your team. They feel
seen, supported and driven! So don’t miss out on
celebrations and acknowledgements wherever necessary!

Career growth clarity

One of the biggest responsibilities you have as a business

owner is to ensure there is a healthy career growth
opportunity for each and every team member. Career growth
clarity keeps your team members excited, keeps them on
their toes about their roles and they themselves ensure they
are growing within the company. When you provide this
clarity, people go outside their comfort zones to provide
results that enhance their opportunity for future growth in
their careers. So, the last important C is career growth clarity!
