More About Ganga River

 The Ganges or Ganga is a trans-boundary river of

Asia which flows through India and Bangladesh.

 The 2,704 km river originates from the Gangotri

Glacier of western Himalayas in the Indian state
of Uttarakhand.

 It flows south and east through the Gangetic

Plain of India and Bangladesh,

 It eventually empties into the Bay of Bengal.

Facts About Ganga Action
Plan
 It was launched on January 14, 1986.
 This plan was started by Prime Minister Rajiv
Gandhi.
 The states involved in Ganga Action Plan are-
Uttaranchal, UP, Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand.
 Its main objective was to improve the water quality
by the interception, diversion and treatment of
domestic sewage and to prevent toxic and industrial
chemical wastes from identified polluting units from
entering the river.
Reasons For Failure Of Ganga Action
Plan
 Lack of long term involvement of authorities to fix responsibilities for failure.

 Least dedication and vision to save the Ganga.

 Lack of local technical expert committees for monitoring the work.

 Insignificant cooperation between Central, State and Local Government

bodies.

 Inappropriate Environmental Planning.

 Establishment of non specific Sewage Treatment Plants on highly productive

crop lands.
Contamination Of Water

 The industries cause chemical contamination of water

some chemicals are released which includes arsenic , lead and fluorides . this lead
to toxicity in plants and animals .To prevent this there are rules that industries
must treat the waste . but they are not following the rule .The soil also is affected
by impure water .

 There are certain agricultural fields that are situated on the bank of river and
weedicides and pesticides are used in it and that gets dissolved in water and it
seeps into the ground water and it gets polluted. There are also certain chemicals
that are released into the water such as arsenic and there is such contamination of
water.
Steps That Were Taken In
Ganga Action Plan
 Public Awareness

 Afforestation

 Setting up waste treatment plants

 Cleaning up of the Ganges

 Restrictions on ganga river

NMCG

National Mission for Clean Ganga(NMCG) was

registered as a society on 12th August 2011 under the
Societies Registration Act 1860.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi approved the

flagship "Namami Gange" program which integrates the
efforts to clean and protect the Ganga River in a
comprehensive manner.
Scientific Terms

 Interception : Interception means when water does not reaches the soil
instead it is taken by leaves, branches of tree and forest floor.

 Arsenic : Arsenic is a chemical which occurs in many minerals . It is usually a

combination of sulfur and metals but it is as pure elemental crystal . It is a
metalloid.

 Lead : Lead is a metal and it has a low melting point and it is very heavy also.

 Fluorides : Salts are made from this and it is odorless also.

 Contamination : It is a process in which a object becomes polluted.

 Sewage treatment : It is a process in which the pollutants are removed.
