PROJECT TITLE
Solid Waste Disposal and
Management

PROJECT RATIONALE
Climate change has been a center talk in this day and age; even young people
from all over the world have started to speak for the environment. Here in the Philippines
people have also talked about it. People with authority and with none have converse as to
what will be upright and good for our environment, however this issue cannot be totally
solved because of ignorance and lack of course of action. People are apt to disposing
different kinds of waste in a way that hurts the environment like burning and improper waste
disposal.
As we visited our target barangay, Barangay Lanigay, and have a keen observation
of the chosen community, our group noticed that they are facing a conspicuous problems
regarding with waste disposal. The leading cause is the deficiencies in materials or bins to
properly dispose their garbage thus resulting in poor and unsanitary disposal of waste
materials. Sacks of waste are just being stored outside of each household or alongside the
streets and worst are some are left scattered in an open area which could be unsafe to
the whole community. These wastes are catalytic factor for the immediate spread of
diseases transmitted by disease- causing microorganisms which paved way to unpleasant
environment situation.
In response to the aforementioned problem, with a prospect of hope, we have
decided to put forward an environment-friendly solid waste disposal and management
which is the Material Recovery Facility or the MRF. This sorting strategy has proven to be
effective in most communities that have already established it, as they have maintained
a clean and healthy environment. Moreover, it turns out to be an initiating business
opportunities to market reusable and recyclable materials in making new products.
Definitely, MRF greatly helps in conserving the environment. It lessens the extraction of our
natural resources thus creating a more sustainable way of manufacturing new products.
OBJECTIVES

As observed by the group, the community in LANIGAY is facing an unpleasant

environment situation regarding waste management. We see this as a golden
opportunity in conducting this project;
a. To protect the health and well-being of the people and the environment. Proper
solid waste management can minimize unsanitary conditions such as pollution
of the environment and outbreaks of vector-borne diseases spread by rodents
and insects.
b. To increase recycling levels and reduction of organic waste disposed to
landfills. The program is much easier for the residents to continue to
independently recycle materials if they so desire thus reduces the percentage
of recyclable materials that go a long way towards landfill sites.
c. To serve as depot for recyclables or bulking centers in making it profitable.
Provides high quality of recyclables which gives potential increase in revenue
in terms of marketing the end products.
d. To contribute to the overall sustainability of the area. Solid waste management
is a surefire way of conserving existing raw materials hence it lessens extraction
of our natural resources thus creating a more sustainable way of living; and
e. To increase awareness of waste minimization issues. Creating a change in
perception and raising awareness among people about the impact of waste
on health and the environment.
