Background of the Study

Nitrogen is found in most chemical fertilizers and contributes to groundwater

Contamination, damaging the environment and people’s health globally, just as many

Regions around the world face acute water shortages. Some of the harm chemical

Fertilizers may cause include waterway pollution, chemical burn to crops, increased air

Pollution, acidification of the soil and mineral depletion of the soil. As empirically

Demonstrated, organic fertilizers help to: boost both nutrient efficiency and organic

Matter content. Organic fertilizers have many sources such as minerals, animal source,

Sewage sludge and plant. In the past decades, eggshell powder processed form hen

Eggs have been used as a natural calcium supplement. In addition to calcium and

Protein, hen eggshells also contain small amounts of other minerals including

Strontium, fluoride, magnesium and selenium. Discarder hen eggshells are often used
As a plant fertilizer and are effective liming sources. It is made almost entirely of

Calcium Carbonate (CaCo3) crystals. On the other hand, calamansi peels are a good

Source of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. It can be used to acidify the soil. Citrus

Peels are packed with immune-boosting Vitamin C, bone-building calcium and anti

Inflammatory, antioxidant bioflavonoids. Citrus peels can be composted, they are an

Excellent source of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. It also protects compost

From scavengers and some pests as many of them dislike the smell. In addition, the

Major constituents of calamodin peel isolated with hexane are limonene and b-myrcene, and the second
major compounds are b-pinene, linabool, and a-pinene. Therefore, this study will help agriculture
especially in planting. The use of organic fertilizers has advantage of improving soil structure, texture
and aeration increasing the soils water retention abilities and stimulating healthy root development.
Which is in contrast to chemical fertilizers or commercial fertilizers which hardens the soil, decreases
fertility, strengthens pesticides, pollutes air and water, and releases greenhouse gases, which brings
hazards to human health and environment as well. That’s why the researcher wants to solve this
problem by using hen eggshell and calamansi peel waste as an alternative organic fertilizer which is
good for nutritioning the soil and It is natural and environmental friendly.
Statement of the problem

Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:

1. Can the hen eggshell and calamansi peel waste be used as components to make organic
fertilizer?

2. Are hen eggshell and calamansi peel waste effective in using as fertilizer?
3. How does this study differ from other commercial products?

Significance of the Study

This study will give information on the effect of hen eggshell and calamansipeel

Waste as organic fertilizer. Nowadays, some organic fertilizers contain chemicals that can harm plants
and to our health. If this study becomes successful, this will lead to public use of hen eggshell and
calamansi peel waste as “shelsi” organic fertilizer instead of discarding it to the garbage. This study will
be conducted in order to help farmers and gardeners in the locality.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study will be limited only in determining the effect of hen eggshell and calamansi peel waste
as “shelsi” organic fertilizer and as well as its phytochemical and chemical properties that supports its
effectivity. This study will only be focusing on the

Assessment of the growth and development of the plant Brassica rapa (snow cabbage)
Found in our garden. The data analysis of the study will focus on comparing the effectivity of hen
eggshell and calamansi peel waste as an organic fertilizer to the commercial chemical fertilizer. The
study will not discuss the evaluation of the soil used since Brassica rapa (snow cabbage) plant is said to
grow in all types of soil but grows best in a well-drained soil which will be used in the study. The
researcher will not use any other soil, plant and chemical fertilizer other than the indicated above.

The following treatments will be used in the study:

T0: Commercial chemical fertilizer-(

T1: Hen eggshell only

T2: Calamansi peel waste only

T3: Shelsi organic fertilizer 1:1 (hen eggshell: calamansi peel waste)

T4: Shelsi organic fertilizer 1:2 (hen eggshell: calamansi peel waste)

T5: Shelsi organic fertilizer 2:1 (hen eggshell: calamansi peel waste)

The complete randomized design will be used in the study. The data will be collected and analyzed
using one-way ANOVA and F-test. This study will be conducted at researcher’s residence, Gomez, San
Isidro, Isabela.
