1.2.2 Rice Farming Processes or Activities

Describe the rice farming activities or processes in both types of rice farming
Step 2 - Ploughing:
Type your answers here -When the early rain starts in may,the farmers begin to ploughing the
fields to mix and overturn the soil.The ploughing distributes the nutrient I the the soil and
introduces air into the soil.Subsistence farmers use traditional farming methods such as wooden
ploughs drawn by buffaloes,and natural fertilizers such as manure.
Type your answers here-Sowing is done by scattering seeds by hand in a small field called a
nuresey while the main field are prepared.
Step 4 - Transplanting:
Type your answers here-40 days later at around June,transplanting takes palce.The seedings or
young rice plants are pulled up by hand from the nursey and planted into the main fields at
regular intervals.
Step 5 – Weeding:
Type your answers here-weeding is done by hand to prevent weeds from choking the young rice
plant. The farmers may also spray pesticides to destroy insect and animals that eat the rice.
Step 6 – Harvesting:
Type your answers here-Farmers break the bunds to drain water from the fields.Dry and sunny
weather during haversting results in higher yields.Subsistence farmers use sickles to cut the
plants.
Step 7 – Threshing & Winnowing:
Type your answers here-winnowing is done by the farmers who use baskets to throw the rice
grains into the air. The wind blows the lighter straw and unwanted material.The heavier rice
grains fall back into the baskets.
