TENSILE STRUCTURES

PART 1- GENERAL

1.01 SUMMARY

A. The work included in this Section comprises furnishing all labour, equipment, and
materials for tensile structures .
B. The Contractor shall supply and install tensile fabric membrane structures of varying
size and form at the locations indicated on the Drawings, as specified herein, or as
directed by the Engineer. Some of the structures shall be pre-engineered while
others require a custom design to achieve the form required .

1.04 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Product manufacturer, testing and installation shall comply with the following
requirements , unless otherwise approved by the Engineer.

1. Tensile structures shall conform to the locations and levels on the drawings
unless otherwise approved by the Engineer.
2. All materials for use in construction shall be obtained only from sources approved
by the Engineer.
3. The specific source of materials shall not be changed without prior written
approval of the Engineer.
4. If the grading and quality of material delivered to the site does not conform to the
grading and quality as previously inspected and tested or does not comply with
the specifications, the Engineer may reject such material at the site of the work.
5. Sufficient materials must be stored in stockpiles to allow for testing and approval
of such materials prior to use in works .

1.05 SUBMITTALS

shall submit sufficient information to the Engineer, prior to


purchase, according to Section 01300 , in order to verify compliance with the
specifications. Such information shall include at least the following, unless
otherwise required by the Engineer.

a. Manufacturer's name.
b. Suppliers name.
c. Product name (if applicable).
d. Product description.
e. Manufacturer's technical data.
f. Storage instructions.
g. Mill certificates.
h. Connection details.

C. Samples

1. Samples (applied) shall be supplied for at least the following products or as


requested by the Engineer.

1. The Contractor shall prepare a mock-up of site furniture meeting the


requirements of Section 01400 for at least the following installations or as
requested by the Engineer.

a. Tensile Structures.

1. Provide mockup of layout where directed by the Engineer.


2. 1 No. mock-up per item specified (tensile structure to be fixed as per final
arrangement).
3. Show range of shades, color. texture and finishes.
4. Accepted mockup may become part of the work.

C. Testing Laboratory

1. Testing of all materials shall be carried out by a suitably equipped site laboratory
or in an independent laboratory as described in Section 01400 and approved by
the Engineer.

a. Routine materials testing and site testing shall always be conducted in the
site laboratory, unless otherwise agreed by the Engineer.
b. All sampling shall be witnessed by the Engineer, unless otherwise directed by
the Engineer.
c. Fabric membrane, including fire retardancy certificates.

2. During the course of the work, all required tests shall be carried out under the
supervision of the Engineer, to ascertain the suitability of materials according to
this specification.
3. The Contractor shall maintain a daily log of all tests carried out for the Engineer's
review.

F. Manufacturer Qualifications:

1. The tensile fabric membrane structures shall be supplied and installed by


companies who have proven experience in this type construction over the past
ten years in the UAE, Gulf countries or other countries with similar climatic
conditions.
2. Provide reference list of at least ten major transportation authorities,
municipalities, universities, or other high-use public environments currently using
site furniture fabricated by the manufacturer.

G. The contractor shall record the batch number of each product used on the site and
maintain it through the warranty period.

H. The contractor shall provide the inspector, upon request, an estimate of the volume of
each product to be used on the site.

B. Delivery

1. Deliver materials and products in factory labeled packages indicating name,


brand, type, size, color, production date and expiry date where applicable.
2. Sequence deliveries to avoid project delays and to permit proper co-ordination of
the work.

C. Storage

1. Store materials in accordance with manufacturer specifications.


2. Deliver product to the site in original unopened containers with proper labels
attached .

1.08 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Field Measurements: Verify actual locations of utilities, curbs and other construction
contiguous with fencing by field measurements before fabrication and indicate
measurements on shop drawings. Provide allowance for trimming and fitting at site.

1.09 COORDINATION AND SCHEDULING

A. Coordinate installation of anchorages for feature post and fencing . Furnish setting
drawings, templates, and directions for installing anchorages , including sleeves,
concrete inserts, anchor bolts, and items with integral anchors that are to be
embedded in concrete or masonry. Deliver such items to the Project Site in time for
installation.

1.10 WARRANTY

A. Provide manufacturer's standard 10 year limited warranty, from the date of purchase,
against defects in materials and workmanship including protection against cracking,
peeling, blistering, and corrosion (rusting).

PART 2- PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL

A. All products supplied to be used with the contract area shall meet current (ISO)
international standards for design and manufacturing. These shall be suitable for use
in extreme climatic conditions with UV protection and other surface protection to
international standards. All items will be reviewed and approved on a case by case
basis.
B. The finish and color of all products shall match the drawings as directed by the
Engineer.

2.02 MATERIALS

A. Fabric Membrane.

1. The fabric membrane shall either be PTFE coated . The membrane shall have a
design life of 25 years. The fabric shall comply with the following criteria.

1. Structural steel shall~fjt'i.~s 4, Grade 43A or ASTM A36 Grade 36, or EN
10025 Grade S355JR.
2. Structural steel plates , bars and tubing shall be Grade B steel formed and welded
conforming to ASTM A 500 with G90 zinc coating on both inside and outside
surfaces (average coating weight of 600 g/m2 } in accordance with the ASTM A
123 hot-dip electroplating process . All ferrou s components shall be galvanized
after fabrication.
3. Stainless steel plates, bars and tubing shall be Grade 316L stainless steel
conforming to ASTM A167 and ASTM A276 .

4. Materials shall also conform to ASTM E 935 testing (Methods A, B, C and D) and
load-testing shall be in accord ance with ICC-ES AC174 (Sections 4.2.2, 4.2.3 ,
and 4.2.4).

C. Cables, Fittings and Hardware.

1. All cables, fittings and associate hardware shall be stainless steel.

a. Anchor bolts: Gr 8.8

b. Wire ropes: SS 316 L with SS end fittings

c. Fasteners: Nuts, bolts, and sheet metal screws, shall be 316L stainless steel
conforming to ASTM F 593.

D. Concrete.
1. Materials: Portland cement complying with ASTM C 150, aggregates complying
with ASTM C 33, and potable water.

a. Concrete Mixture: Normal-weight concrete with not less than 20.7- Mpa
compressive strength (28 days), 75-mm slump, and contain "coarse

1. Polyester Coating: Thermal stratification coating process (high-temperature, in-
line, multi-stage, multi-layer) including six-stage pretreatment/wash with zinc
phosphate and a two-stage separate electrostatic spray application of a polyester
top coat finish.

a. Top Coat Coating Thickness: No-mar TGIC polyester powder finish with
minimum thickness of 65 microns (0.8 mm).

Coating Performance Requirements: Coating meets or exceeds the following:


i. Gloss (EN ISO 2813 (60°)}: 85 + 10
ii. Adhesion (EN ISO 2409 (2mm)): Cross-cut rating GtO (100% adhesion)
iii. Impact Resistance (ASTM D2794 (5/8" ball)): Passes 2.5Nm without
detachment after tape pull test
iv. Cupping Test (EN ISO 1520): Passes 2mm indentation without cracking.
Passes 5mm indentation without detachment after tape pull test
v. Flexibility (EN ISO 151 9): Passes 12mm cylindrical Mandrel bend test

x. Accelerated weathering test (ASTM G 154 (UVA-340)): Cycle: 8 hours at


60oC UV and 4 hours at 45°C condensation. No chalking, excellent gloss
retention and colour stability after 3000 hours testing .
xi. Natural weathering test (ASTM G 7 (South Florida, 27oN)): No chalking,
excellent gloss retention and colour stability after 36 months exposure
(angle of 5° to south)
xii. Surface spread of flame (BS 476 Part 7- 1987): Class 1
xiii. Fire propagation test (BS 476 Part 6 - 989): Excellent index to
performance.

2.03 STRUCTURAL CERTIFICATION

A. For custom designed structures, the Contractor shall undertake full responsibility for
all aspects of the design , manufacture and installation. The form and preliminary
dimensions of the custom design structures shall be as shown on the Drawings, and
the Contractor shall appoint a specialized company to perform the design and
manufacture ·of these features. All structural designs shall be submitted to the
Engineer for review and approval. The design of these structures shall be in
accordance with AASHTO, BOCA, AISC , and ACI standards.

B. The structural design shall include.

1. Computer modeling of the structure in three dimensions to provide 3-D geometry


(system points) for use on the project.
2. Layout plans of the structure.
3. Visual images and animations of the final design. Pre-fabricated 1 :50 scale
model of all membrane structures .

PART 3- EXECUTION

3.01 GENERAL

A. All operations shall be performed in accordance with the specification, and in


conformity with the lines, grades, thickness and typical cross Section shown on the
plans or established by the Engineer. Only approved material shall be used in the
construction. The embankment and subgrade in fill shall be constructed utilizing only
suitable material obtained from roadway excavation or imported fill material from
sources previously approved by the competent authority.

3.02 SITE PREPARATION AND CLEARING

A. Site preparation and clearing shall comply with Section 02200, unless otherwise
approved by the Engineer.

B. Verify that substrates are stable and capable of supporting the weight of items
covered under this section .

C. Verify that substrates have been adequately prepared to securely anchor those items
that will be surface mounted .

1. Laying out and fixing.


2. Erection of steelwork and membrane.
3. Dressing out and post tensioning.

C. The supplier shall provide a method statement for the erection method for the
Engineer's review. The Contractor shall plan the erection program with due respect to
the climatic conditions.

D. Once the membrane has been hoisted, it must be gradually tensioned to the final pre-
stress tension. When this point has been reached, every part shall be checked for
compliance with the specification. Finally, the membrane shall be fully tensioned and
checked. If required, the Contractor shall re-tension the membrane as directed by the
Engineer.

E. Pre-stress shall be applied to the membrane surface with sufficient strength so as to


resist environmental loads. The pre-stress used in the structure shall be high enough
that the internal tensions in the membrane are never zero when loaded with external
or environmental forces.

H. Prior to erection of the structure, the Contractor shall check all structural elements to
ensure all drill holes and fixings are properly aligned and formed.

3.06 PROTECTION

A. Erect temporary barriers to protect site furniture during drying and curing.

B. Lock site to prevent use until acceptance by the owner's representative.

3.07 CLEAN UP

Remove all containers, surplus materials and debris.
