Discuss the basic operating principle of ICE we are currently using (provide drawing
if necessary)

FOUR-STROKE CYCLE OPERATION

-one power impulse in two revolutions.
- this explains why heavy flywheels are important on a one-cylinder engine.

In 4SCE, it requires 4 strokes to complete a combustion engine.

1st stroke (Intake Stroke)- taking in of air and gasoline mixture.
2nd stroke (Compression stroke)- compression of the fuel mixture.
3rd stroke (Power stroke)- expansion of the burned gas producing the power.
4th stroke (Exhaust stroke)- exhaust of the product of combustion.

TWO-STROKE CYCLE OPERATION

Important characteristics:
1. The crankcase is closed and must be airtight.
2. Ports of opening at the side of the cylinder, take the place of the valve.
3. There’s no valve-operating mechanism
4. The fuel mixture usually enters and passes through the crankcase on its way to
the cylinder.
3. Differentiate the 4-stroke and 2-stroke cycle engines (provide drawing if necessary)

Contains a valve-operating mechanism. Ports-operating mechanism
Complicated Design Simple construction
Less noise when operating Creates more noise
The air-fuel mixture remains in the combustion The air-fuel mixture enters through the inlet port
chamber only. and travels to internal combustion.
Generates less smoke and shows more efficiency More smoke and less efficiency
Engines are expensive due to lubrication and Engines are cheaper and are simple for
valves and are tough to manufacture manufacturing
It generates less torque High torque
Less wear and tear occur More wear and tear occur
