4) Housing and Home

1) Types of houses in Great Britain:

Picture 1: detached house – it stands by itself and it has 2-3 floors, one family lives there
Picture 2: semi-detached houses – are joined together by one common wall, two families live there
Picture 3: terraced houses – are built in a row, in one street, they have common back walls
Picture 4: bungalow – it is built on one level, it stands by itself

2) Types of houses in Slovakia:

Family house – it stands by itself, usually in a village, it has garden and garage. Sometimes 2 families
live together in one house (grandparents, parents and children)

Block of flats (apartments) – they are built in towns in housing estates, they have 4, 8, 13 floors and
in one block of flats there are 15 – 30 flats, even more

3) Advantages and disadvantages of living in a city and a village :

Advantages of living in a city : there are many opportunities for jobs, education, sports, social life
: cultural life – events, concerts, theatre, opera, museums, galleries,..
: lots of restaurants – different cuisines, cafés, pubs, fast food restaurants,...
: there is large hospital, all kinds of schools, sport facilities, ...
: many shops, huge shopping centres, ....
Disadvantages of living in a city: city is polluted, noisy, crowded and life there is hectic
: there is a lot of mess and dirt in the streets
: there is high level of crime
: housing estate is not an ideal place for children

Advantages of living in a village: clean and fresh air, nature around,


: privacy in own garden (parties), people can grow own vegetebles and fruits ....
: everybody knows each other (disadvantage ????)
: people are more friendly and heplful
Disadvantages of living in a village: there are fewer job possibilities, sport facilities, poor social life
: there is usually only one food shop (grocery)
: there is only primary school (or no school – children have to travel to town)
: buses don´t go frequently – problem with transport to school / work
: no hospital

owen, cooker (stove), kettle, ......
In the bedroom there are beds, wardrobes, shelves, night table, mirror, ......
In the bathroom there are shower, bath (tube), sink, mirror .......

5) Name the jobs that regularly need to be done in your home

cleaning of floor, windows, flat; tidy up your room; vacuum cleaning (hoovering); taking out rubbish;
washing dishes; washing clothes; cutting grass in garden; ironing; .....

6) Kinds of problems young people have with housing nowadays

Houses / flats are very expensive today therefore young people live together with parents / family for
long time (sometimes even when they have their own family and children). However if they decide to
live on their own they usually take a loan or mortgage from a bank. Loans are for long time (30
years).
Some young people are homeless, charity or state try to help them with building of asylum houses.

7) Describe your dream house

I would like to live in village / town/ city centre / near the sea / in the forest ... because I work there,
I have my family and friends there, I love nature, ......... My house should be big / large / small /
wooden .... . It should have big, fully equiped kitchen, large garden, indoor swimming pool, wine
cellar, fireplace, exercise area, sauna ........ .
